چکیده

On average, “young”people underestimate whereas “old”people overestimate their chances to survive into the future. We adopt a Bayesian learning model of ambiguous survival beliefs which replicates these patterns. The model is embedded within a non-expected utility model of life-cycle consumption and saving. Our analysis shows that agents with ambiguous survival beliefs (i) save less than originally planned, (ii) exhibit undersaving at younger ages, and (iii) hold larger amounts of assets in old age than their rational expectations counterparts who correctly assess their survival probabilities. Our ambiguity-driven model therefore simultaneously accounts for three important empirical findings on household saving behavior. JEL Classification: D91, D83, E21.

A life-cycle model with ambiguous survival beliefs

Based on a cognitive notion of neo-additive capacities reflecting likelihood insensitivity with respect to survival chances, we construct a Choquet Bayesian learning model over the life-cycle that generates a motivational notion of neoadditive survival beliefs expressing ambiguity attitudes. We embed these neoadditive survival beliefs as decision weights in a Choquet expected utility life-cycle...

Ambiguous Survival Beliefs and Hyperbolic Discounting in a Life-Cycle Model

On average, young people underestimate whereas old people overestimate their chances to survive into the future. We employ a subjective survival belief model proposed by Ludwig and Zimper (2013) which can replicate these patterns. The model is compared with hyperbolic discounting within a standard life-cycle setting of consumption and savings. We show theoretically that the first order conditio...

Modeling the Structural Relationship between Epistemological Beliefs Qualities of school life with Academic achievement of Adolescent Students

The aim of this study was to modeling structural relationship between epistemological beliefs qualities of school life with academic achievement. Correlation research was based on the structural equation modeling technique, specifically regression equations (combining path analysis and factor analysis of the second level). The statistical population consisted of all boys of the first year of se...

Hierarchies of ambiguous beliefs

We present a theory of interactive beliefs analogous to Mertens and Zamir [31] and Brandenburger and Dekel [10] that allows for hierarchies of ambiguity. Each agent is allowed a compact set of beliefs at each level, rather than just a single belief as in the standard model. We propose appropriate definitions of coherency and common knowledge for our types. Common knowledge of coherency closes t...
