چکیده
A new study using transcranial direct current stimulation shows that modulating parietal cortex activity during the learning of abstract numerical material can enhance numerical competency for up to six months.

Quantity without numbers and numbers without quantity in the parietal cortex
A dominant view in numerical cognition is that processing the quantity indicated by numbers (e.g. deciding the larger between two numbers such as '12.07' or '15.02') relies on the intraparietal regions (IPS) of the cerebral cortex. However, it remains unclear whether the IPS could play a more general role in numerical cognition, for example in (1) quantity processing even with non-numerical sti...
متن کاملAre Arabic and verbal numbers processed in different ways?
Four experiments were conducted in order to examine effects of notation--Arabic and verbal numbers--on relevant and irrelevant numerical processing. In Experiment 1, notation interacted with the numerical distance effect, and irrelevant physical size affected numerical processing (i.e., size congruity effect) for both notations but to a lesser degree for verbal numbers. In contrast, size congru...
متن کاملA case of selective impairment of encyclopaedic numerical knowledge or 'when December 25th is no longer Christmas day, but '20+5' is still 25'.
This study investigates encyclopaedic numerical knowledge in a patient with a presumed left temporal dysfunction, associated with temporal lobe epilepsy. Encyclopaedic numbers are those used as nominal labels (such as in 'British Broadcasting Corporation - BBC 1' or 'Levis 501') to express familiar or historical dates (e.g., our birthday or the French revolution, 1789) and to indicate other gen...
متن کاملNeural Dissociation of Number from Letter Recognition and Its Relationship to Parietal Numerical Processing
The visual recognition of letters dissociates from the recognition of numbers at both the behavioral and neural level. In this article, using fMRI, we investigate whether the visual recognition of numbers dissociates from letters, thereby establishing a double dissociation. In Experiment 1, participants viewed strings of consonants and Arabic numerals. We found that letters activated the left m...
متن کاملDevelopment of numerical processing in children with typical and dyscalculic arithmetic skills—a longitudinal study
Numerical processing has been demonstrated to be closely associated with arithmetic skills, however, our knowledge on the development of the relevant cognitive mechanisms is limited. The present longitudinal study investigated the developmental trajectories of numerical processing in 42 children with age-adequate arithmetic development and 41 children with dyscalculia over a 2-year period from ...
