Determined Free Serum Testosterone is Better than Total Testosterone as a Predictor of Prostate Cancer Risk

چکیده
Background: Circulating testosterone remains the main source of androgens, however only 1%-2% circulates as free testosterone (fT), hormone active form. To compare the performance of serum fT and total testosterone (tT) as predictors of prostate cancer (PCa) detection and aggressiveness. Methods: Serum fT (RIA, pg/mL) and tT (LC/MS, ng/dL) were prospectively determined in 3364 consecutive men with PCa suspicion scheduled to TRUS guided biopsy. Tumor aggressiveness was assessed by Gleason grade (8 to 10) and D ́Amico risk (cT3a+ or PSA>20 ng/mL or Gleason 8 to 10). Recodification of fT and tT in four groups according to percentile (ptile) distribution were done. tT/1 (min to 10 ptile): 62-291 ng/dl, tT/2

Is a Decreased Serum Testosterone Level a Risk Factor for Prostate Cancer? A Cohort Study of Korean Men
PURPOSE To investigate patients who had transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS)-guided prostate biopsy to define the role of the serum testosterone level in predicting prostate cancer risk and its association with a high Gleason score. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 568 patients who underwent prostate biopsy were entered in this study. We divided the patients into two groups according to serum t...
متن کاملSerum testosterone as a biomarker for second prostatic biopsy in men with negative first biopsy for prostatic cancer and PSA>4ng/mL, or with PIN biopsy result
INTRODUCTION Data from animal, clinical and prevention studies support the role of androgens in prostate cancer growth, proliferation and progression. Results of serum based epidemiologic studies in humans, however, have been inconclusive. The present study aims to define whether serum testosterone can be used as a predictor of a posi¬tive second biopsy in males considered for re-biopsy. MATE...
متن کاملSerum testosterone and the risk of prostate cancer: potential implications for testosterone therapy.
OBJECTIVE A potential risk of testosterone replacement therapy is an increase in the incidence of prostate cancer, but it is unclear whether higher levels of serum testosterone are associated with a higher risk of prostate cancer. We prospectively evaluated serum androgen concentrations and prostate cancer risk. METHOD Included were 794 members of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging. We...
متن کاملSerum testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin concentrations and the risk of prostate carcinoma: a longitudinal study.
BACKGROUND It has been hypothesized that high androgen levels are determinants of prostate carcinoma. METHODS Serum concentrations of testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and androstenedione were analyzed to determine their role as predictors of prostate carcinoma in a longitudinal, population-based, nested case-control study. The serum concentrations of testosterone, SHBG, and ...
