Stream Biotic Health and Land Cover in the Soque River Watershed
نویسنده
چکیده
The Soque River Watershed Partnership received CWA §319 funding to perform a comprehensive baseline assessment of the biological, chemical, and physical health of the watershed. Certain stream segments in the Soque basin violate State water quality standards for bacteria and sediments. The assessment is designed to identify and prioritize areas for both protection and remediation. Rapid bioassessment protocols were used to collect macroinvertebrate samples at 19 stream sites in the watershed. Samples were collected during a late fall / winter index period over two years (20052006). Benthic data were analyzed to evaluate biotic integrity using a multimetric index designed for the Southern Inner Piedmont (Level IV Ecoregion 45a). Results indicate strong relationships between stream biotic health and land cover in the catchments evaluated. Urbanization and increased development were most strongly correlated with low biotic index scores and poor instream and riparian habitat in the study area. Data from the assessment will be used by Partnership members to develop a watershed protection plan to aid localities and citizens in making decisions about the use of water resources in the watershed. The goal is to integrate the findings and recommendations from the assessment into decision-making processes that shape the future of the Soque River basin.

Rapid assessment of the riparian zone habitat of river
Some riparian areas of the country are in danger of deterioration due to uncontrolled exploitation coupled with loose implementation of environmental protection policies and regulations. Muleta River, a major watershed in Bukidnon, Philippines, was assessed to determine the present condition of its riparian habitat. Abiotic and biotic conditions of the river were assessed. Other factors includi...
متن کاملEffects of Urbanization on Land Use/Land Cover and Stream Flow of a Sub-Tropical River Basin of India
Rapid urbanization changes the land use/land cover pattern of a developing region. Due to these land surface changes, stream flow of the rivers also changes. It is important to investigate the factors affecting hydrological characteristics of the river basin for better river basin management planning. This study is aimed to understand the effect of Land Use/Land Cover (LU/LC) changes on stream ...

The effect of Urban Development on Watershed Hydrological Properties (case study: Tajrish Watershed) Throughout the human history, societies and rivers have been closely linked, so that the human civilization began from the riverside (Stevaux et al. 2009 (. The quantitative and qualitative characteristic of river is vulnerable to land-use changes (Kang et al. 2010). Natural and urban watershed...

/ Fish and macroinvertebrate assemblage composition, instream habitat features and surrounding land use were assessed in an agriculturally developed watershed to relate overall biotic condition to patterns of land use and channel structure. Six 100-m reaches were sampled on each of three first-order warm-water tributaries of the River Raisin in southeastern Michigan. Comparisons among sites and...

1. Despite wide recognition of the need for catchment-scale management to ensure the integrity of river ecosystems, the science and policy basis for joint management of land and water remains poorly understood. An interdisciplinary case study of a river basin in south-eastern Michigan is presented. 2. The River Raisin drains an area of 2776 km2, of which some 70% is agricultural land. The upper...
