Location, Location, Location: How Network Embeddedness Affects Project Success in Open Source Systems

چکیده
T community-based model for software development in open source environments is becoming a viable alternative to traditional firm-based models. To better understand the workings of open source environments, we examine the effects of network embeddedness—or the nature of the relationship among projects and developers—on the success of open source projects. We find that considerable heterogeneity exists in the network embeddedness of open source projects and project managers. We use a visual representation of the affiliation network of projects and developers as well as a formal statistical analysis to demonstrate this heterogeneity and to investigate how these structures differ across projects and project managers. Our main results surround the effect of this differential network embeddedness on project success. We find that network embeddedness has strong and significant effects on both technical and commercial success, but that those effects are quite complex. We use latent class regression analysis to show that multiple regimes exist and that some of the effects of network embeddedness are positive under some regimes and negative under others. We use project age and number of page views to provide insights into the direction of the effect of network embeddedness on project success. Our findings show that different aspects of network embeddedness have powerful but subtle effects on project success and suggest that this is a rich environment for further study.

How Structural Embeddedness Affects Project Success in Open Source Systems
With the community-based model for software development followed in open source environments becoming a viable alternative to traditional firm-based models, we examine the effects of structural embeddedness-or the nature of the relationship among projects and developers-on the success of open source projects. We find that considerable heterogeneity exists in the embeddedness of open source proj...
متن کاملSink Location Service Based on Fano Plane in Wireless Sensor Networks
Sink location is considered as a basic service in geographic routing in wireless sensor networks. Obtaining the location of sink node by source node using an efficient method with low complexity has always been a challenging issue in research. In this paper, a sink location algorithm based on Fano plane is proposed. The research challenge is how to ensure the intersection of two SLQ (Location Q...
متن کاملA fuzzy capacitated facility location-network design model: A hybrid firefly and invasive weed optimization (FIWO) solution
Facility location-network design (FLND) problem, which determines the location of facilities and also communication links between the demand and facility nodes, is arisen from the combination of the facility location and network design problems. This paper deals with fuzzy capacitated facility location-network design model which aims to select the facilities and candidate links in a way that yi...
متن کاملA Review of Spatial Factor Modeling Techniques in Recommending Point of Interest Using Location-based Social Network Information
The rapid growth of mobile phone technology and its combination with various technologies like GPS has added location context to social networks and has led to the formation of location-based social networks. In social networking sites, recommender systems are used to recommend points of interest (POIs) to users. Traditional recommender systems, such as film and book recommendations, have a lon...
متن کاملHierarchical Facility Location and Hub Network Problems: A literature review
In this paper, a complete review of published researches about hierarchical facility location and hub network problems is presented. Hierarchical network is a system where facilities with different service levels interact in a top-down way or vice versa. In Hierarchical systems, service levels are composed of different facilities. Published papers from (1970) to (2015) have been studied and a c...
