Clinical experience with fluothane, a new non-explosive anaesthetic agent.

چکیده
FoR ~ANY YEARS anaesthetists have felt the need for a non-explosive anaesthetic agent possessing none of the. disadvantages assocmted with chloroform, trichlorethylene and mtrous o~ide, rhat is, the agent should be non-hepatotoxm, stable in the presence of soda lime and heat, an~ have a high therapeu :ie ratio. Since most heavily fluorinated hydrocarbons are not m2qamma )le, and many possess anaesthetic properties,, they present interesting pos,,ibilities. Robbins (1) found that some hydrocarbons had greater therapeutic rati.os than chloroform or ether, but that when they were used, severe hypotension, cardiac arrhythmias and slamulation of skeletal mtlscle occurred. In 1956, Rav ent6s and Suckhng synthesized and investigated a series of fluorinated hydrocarbons, and one in particular-CF8 CHC [Br (Fluothane)-was found to have potent anaesthetic properties (2). The first clinical trial has been reported by Johnstone (8)_who studied the human cardiovascular response to Fluqthane|

The impurities in Fluothane: their biological properties.
Fluothane (halothane BP), one of the purest anaesthetics, contains traces of some impurities amounting to a total of 005 per cent w/w, none of them exceeding 001 per cent w/w. Once these impurities had been identified they were synthesized and tested for anaesthetic activity and toxicity. The results of these experiments showed that most of these impurities have low toxicity but Fluothane conta...

There has been some eontrovers over the merit of adding ethelr to Fluothane. Hudon, Jaeques__and Boivin 1 suggested that by adding ether to prochaee respiratory and myocardial stimulation inany of the disadvantages of Ft~othane could be remedied. Thei...
متن کاملSome aspects of the clinical pharmacology of nitrous oxide.
NIvaotrs OXIDE has been employed in anaesthesia since the beginning of the art itself. 1 This anaesthetic agent, therefore, must be considered to have stood the test of time and there can surely be few anaesthetists who would find themselves questioning its safety. As it is employed in modern anaesthetic practice, nitrous oxide is generally regarded as an adjuvant to balanced anaesthesia with f...

AFTEX~ TrraEE YEARS of ever increasing clinical use, methoxyflurane remains an effective and relatively safe anaesthetic agent worthy of great interest in practice. Its unquestionable qualities as a stable, pote~lt hypnotic and lanalgesic, capable of inducing a muscular relaxation comparable with tl~at of deep ether, nonetheless devoid of explosive and toxic hazards, ha,~e contributed to this w...

The lower flammability limit is 4 per cent in oxygen or air (ethyl ether, 2 per cent) and the minimum ignition energy is higher by many fold than that of diethyl ether or divinyl ethe...
