چکیده

Two entangled particles in threedimensional Hilbert space (per particle) are considered in an EPR-type arrangement. On each side the Kochen-Specker observables {J 1 , J 2 2 , J 2 3 } and {J̄ 2 1 , J̄ 2 2 , J 2 3 } with [J 2 1 , J̄ 2 1 ] 6= 0 are measured. The outcomes of measurements of J 3 (via J 2 1 , J 2 2 ) and J 2 3 (via J̄ 1 , J̄ 2 2 ) are compared. Although formally J 2 3 is associated with the same projection operator, quantum contextuality requires that the outcome depends on the complete disposition of the measurement apparatus, in particular whether J 1 or J̄ 2 1 is measured alongside. Besides complementarity, contextuality [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] is another, more subtle nonclassical feature of quantum mechanics. That is, one and the same physical observable may appear different, depending on the context of measurement; i.e., depending on the particular way it was inferred. Stated differently, the outcome of a physical measurement may depend also on other physical measurements which are coperformed. In Bell’s own words [1, section 5], “The result of an observation may reasonably depend not only on the state of the system . . . but also on the complete disposition of the apparatus.” This property is usually referred to as contextuality. Formally, contextuality may be related to the nonexistence of two-valued measures on Hilbert logics [6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11] and the partial algebra of projection operators [12, 13] when the dimension of the Hilbert space is higher than two. Contextuality then expresses the impossibility to construct consistently truth values of the whole physical system by any arrangement of truth values of “proper parts” thereof. The term “proper part” refers to any maximal number of independent comeasurable observables corresponding to commuting self-adjoint operators. In quantum logics [14, 15], these are denoted by boolean subalgebras or “blocks” which can be represented by a single “maximal” observable. The entirety of all proper parts is then identified with the whole

Proposal for revealing quantum nonlocality via local contextuality.

Two distant systems can exhibit quantum nonlocality even though the correlations between them admit a local model. This nonlocality can be revealed by testing extra correlations between successive measurements on one of the systems which do not admit a noncontextual model whatever the reduced state of this system is. This shows that quantum contextuality plays a fundamental role in quantum nonl...

Testing Contextuality in Cyclic Psychophysical Systems of High Ranks

Contextuality-by-Default (CbD) is a mathematical framework for understanding the role of context in systems with deterministic inputs and random outputs. A necessary and sufficient condition for contextuality was derived for cyclic systems with binary outcomes. In quantum physics, the cyclic systems of ranks n = 5, 4, and 3 are known as systems of Klyachko-type, EPR-Bell-type, and Leggett-Garg-...

Contextuality, Cohomology and Paradox

Contextuality is a key feature of quantum mechanics that provides an important nonclassical resource for quantum information and computation. Abramsky and Brandenburger used sheaf theory to give a general treatment of contextuality in quantum theory [New Journal of Physics 13 (2011) 113036]. However, contextual phenomena are found in other fields as well, for example database theory. In this pa...

Advanced Analysis of Quantum Contextuality in a Psychophysical Double-Detection Experiment

The results of behavioral experiments typically exhibit inconsistent connectedness, i.e., they violate the condition known as “no-signaling,” “no-disturbance,” or “marginal selectivity.” This prevents one from evaluating these experiments in terms of quantum contextuality if the latter understood traditionally (as, e.g., in the Kochen-Specker theorem or Bell-type inequalities). The Contextualit...

Experimentally testable state-independent quantum contextuality.

We show that there are Bell-type inequalities for noncontextual theories that are violated by any quantum state. One of these inequalities between the correlations of compatible measurements is particularly suitable for testing this state-independent violation in an experiment.
