Interferometric Detection of Action Potentials In Vitro
نویسندگان
چکیده
The essential optical components include a 5 mW polarized laser (HeNe); single mode, polarization preserving optical fiber with couplers; Wollaston prism, birefringent plate; water immersion 20x microscope objective; electro-optic modulator, and polarization analyzer. The interferometric microscope needs to be compact and stiff, a combination that can be achieved with Microbench components (LINOS Photonics; Milford, MA).

Interferometric detection of action potentials.
Individual action potentials in axons can be detected in vitro using intrinsic optical signals. The principles of this detection technique are described here. The technique has been demonstrated using neuronal axons dissected from lobster. It would also be applicable to axons and active dendrites of cultured neurons with diameters somewhat larger than an optical wavelength. Using index-matching...
متن کاملDetection of Action Potentials In Vitro by Changes in Refractive Index
The detection of individual action potentials in nerve cells via intrinsic optical signals could open a new modality for the analysis of cellular properties in spatially extended cells and emergent properties in networks of neurons. Here we review the experimental evidence for the detection of changes in intrinsic optical properties, i.e., changes in optical refractive index, that covary with c...

We report noncontact optical measurement of fast transient structural changes in the crustacean nerve during action potential propagation without the need for exogenous chemicals or reflection coatings. The technique, spectral domain optical coherence tomography, provides real-time cross-sectional images of the nerve with micron-scale resolution to select a specific region for functional assess...

Objective(s):Protective effects of diuretics, particularly of hydrochlorothiazide (HCT), for the development of seizure attacksepilepsy have been described in vivo. However, itsthe mechanism of action of HCT is unknownneeds to be elucidated. Materials and Methods: Extracellular field potentials were recorded from the CA1- and CA3-subfields of the hippocampus of rats. Epileptiform discharges wer...
متن کاملA Hybrid Classifier for Characterizing Motor Unit Action Potentials in Diagnosing Neuromuscular Disorders
Background: The time and frequency features of motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) extracted from electromyographic (EMG) signal provide discriminative information for diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders. However, the results of conventional automatic diagnosis methods using MUAP features is not convincing yet. Objective: The main goal in designing a MUAP characterization system ...
