چکیده

Homogeneous graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) onto cellulose was carried out in N, N – dimethyl acetamide/LiCl (DMAc/LiCl) and dimethyl sulfoxide/ paraformaldehyde (DMSO/PF) solvent system taking ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN), benzoyl peroxide (BPO) and tin (II)-2ethyl hexanoate [Sn(Oct)2] as initiators. Different grafting parameters like graft yield (GY), grafting efficiency (GE) and total conversion of monomer to polymer (TC) were evaluated at different reaction conditions of temperature, time, and variation of the amount of monomer and initiator. The viscosity average molecular weight of grafted PMMA and number of grafts per cellulose chain were also calculated. The products were characterized by FT-IR and 1H-NMR analyses and possible reaction mechanisms were deduced. Thermal degradation of the grafted products was also studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and differential thermo-gravimetry (DTG). Keywords—Grafting, grafting efficiency, homogeneous medium, methyl methacrylate.

Synthesis of Cellulose-graft-poly(methyl Methacrylate) via Homogeneous Atrp

Cellulose-graft-poly(methylmethacrylate) (cellulose-g-PMMA) copolymers were prepared by homogeneous atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) under mild conditions, in an attempt to develop an efficient way to modify the surface of cellulose. A cellulose macro-initiator was successfully synthesized by direct homogeneous acylation of cellulose with 2-bromopropionyl bromide in a room temperatur...

Cellulose Graft Copolymers: Synthesis, Properties, and Applications

Grafting of vinyl monomers onto cellulose is an important tool for the modification of cellulose. Depending on the monomer grafted onto cellulose, it gains new properties. The grafting can be performed in heterogeneous or homogeneous medium. In the grafting performed in heterogeneous medium, the reaction is carried out in aqueous medium using a suitable initiator. As initiator, the radiation or...

Denture base polymers, poly methyl methacrylate improved using free radical copolymerization

Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) is the most common material used in Prosthodontics. Several studies indicate a breakdown of the number of very high resin bases after 2 to 3 years to avoid breaking bass and several attempts have been made, such as altering the chemical structure of resin by adding causes cross linking or copolymerization. The innovative method for improving the physical properti...

Graft Copolymers of Poly(methyl methacrylate) on Cellulose and Their Use as Supports in Metal Ion Sorptiona

We have reported earlier some work on the grafting of vinyl monomers onto cellulose extracted from pine needles. The grafting was carried out both by radiation1,2 and by a chemical initiation method3,4. The optimum grafting conditions for a single monomer were used to co-graft it with other comonomers so as to improve upon the intrinsic properties of the cellulose backbone5,6. These graft copol...

Synthesis and characterization of membranes obtained by graft copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and acrylic acid onto chitosan.

Chitosan based membranes to be applied on wound healing as topical drug delivery systems were developed by graft copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) onto chitosan using cerium ammonium nitrate as chemical initiator. Evidence for graft copolymerization of the vinyl monomers onto chitosan was obtained by FTIR and DMTA. Swelling degree, cytotoxicity, thromb...
