3. Anthocyanins: Mechanism of action and therapeutic efficacy
نویسندگان
چکیده
The current status of research on anthocyanins, their biological effects in vitro and in vivo and their potential application in human therapy are reviewed. Anthocyanins are a class of compounds belonging to the larger flavonoids class which comprises a subset of the polyphenol class of compounds. Anthocyanins are almost exclusively found in higher plants. Major sources of anthocyanins are blueberries, cherries, raspberries, strawberries, black currants, purple grapes and red wine. Anthocyanins are included in the list of natural compounds known to work as powerful antioxidants. The properties of anthocyanins for human health are due to their peculiar chemical structure, as these substances are very reactive towards reactive oxygen species (ROS). Anthocianins have been reported to exert positive effects in the treatment of various diseases and are prescribed as medicines in several countries for thousands of years. The available scientific evidence indicates that anthocyanins contained in a diet rich in fruits and vegetables are associated with a decreased risk of inflammation-related chronic diseases and that anthocyanins display a wide range of biological activities including antimicrobial, anti-carcinogenic and proapoptotic activities; improvement of vision Correspondence/Reprint request: Dr. Simona Lucioli, Centro di Ricerca per la Frutticoltura, CRA-Consiglio per la Ricerca e la Sperimentazione in Agricoltura, Via di Fioranello, 52 00134 Roma, Italy E-mail: [email protected]

Efficacy of different antiemetics with different mechanism of action on xylazine induced emesis in cats
Xylazine hydrochloride, α2 adrenoceptor agonist, is an analgesic, sedative, tranquilizer, and muscle relaxant agent in veterinary medicine which is mostly used as in pre-anesthesia in veterinary medicine. One of the main adverse effects of xylazine which limits application of this medication in small animal veterinary practice (mostly in cats) is nausea and vomiting which can end up with aspira...

متن کاملComparison of anti-inflammatory activities of an anthocyanin-rich fraction from Portuguese blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) and 5-aminosalicylic acid in a TNBS-induced colitis rat model
Despite the actual therapeutic approaches for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), efficient and secure alternative options remain a research focus. In this context, anthocyanins seem promising natural anti-inflammatory agents, but their action mechanisms and efficacy as compared with established drugs still require more clarification. The main aim of this study was to compare the anti-inflammator...

Background: Treatment of leishmaniasis is a challenge due to problems such as high price and dose of the drug, drug resistance and side effects. Objective: The study aims to introduce plants compounds, which their antileishmanial effects were approved in vivo conditions. Methods: This study as a review article was performed by searching the keywords of “medicinal plants with in vivo antileishma...
متن کاملCyanidin-3-o-glucoside directly binds to ERα36 and inhibits EGFR-positive triple-negative breast cancer
Anthocyanins have been shown to inhibit the growth and metastatic potential of breast cancer (BC) cells. However, the effects of individual anthocyanins on triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) have not yet been studied. In this study, we found that cyanidin-3-o-glucoside (Cy-3-glu) preferentially promotes the apoptosis of TNBC cells, which co-express the estrogen receptor alpha 36 (ERα36) and t...
