چکیده

In this work, we study the coupling of a culture of micro-algae limited by light and an anaerobic digester in a two-tank bioreactor. The model for the reactor combines a periodic day-night light for the culture of microalgae and a classical chemostat model for the digester. We first prove the existence and attraction of periodic solutions of this problem for a one day period. Then we study the optimal control problem of optimizing the production of methane in the digester during a certain timeframe, the control on the system being the dilution rate (the input flow of micro-algae in the digester). We apply Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle in order to characterize optimal controls, including the computation of singular controls. We present numerical simulations by direct and indirect methods for different light models, and compare the optimal 1-day periodic solution to the optimal strategy over larger timeframes. Finally, we also investigate the dependence of the optimal cost with respect to the volume ratio of the two tanks. Copyright c © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Evaluation of pre-treatment efficiency of fats, oils and greases using low frequency ultrasonic waves to accelerate the process of anaerobic digestion

Background and Objective: Hydrolysis of fat, oil and grease by ultrasonic waves is a pre-treatment method before anaerobic digestion which can change their physical, chemical and biological properties. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the efficiency of ultrasonic waves to improve the hydrolysis process and its use as an auxiliary substrate to increase the efficiency of anaerobi...

Modeling anaerobic digestion of microalgae using ADM1.

The coupling between a microalgal pond and an anaerobic digester is a promising alternative for sustainable energy production by transforming carbon dioxide into methane using solar energy. In this paper, we demonstrate the ability of the original ADM1 model and a modified version (based on Contois kinetics for the hydrolysis steps) to represent microalgae anaerobic digestion. Simulations were ...

Highly efficient methane generation from untreated microalgae biomass

BACKGROUND The fact that microalgae perform very efficiently photosynthetic conversion of sunlight into chemical energy has moved them into the focus of regenerative fuel research. Especially, biogas generation via anaerobic digestion is economically attractive due to the comparably simple apparative process technology and the theoretical possibility of converting the entire algal biomass to bi...
