چکیده

A new coronagraph that performs destructive interference between copies of the telescope pupil in which “slices” have been swapped is studied in this paper. A fourth-order “pupil-swapping coronagraph” is particularly attractive for direct imaging of extrasolar terrestrial planets: it achieves 100% throughput at 1.4l/d on a square pupil (72.5% at 1.77 on a circular pupil), is compatible with a central obstruction and spiders, l/d and delivers sharp images of off-axis sources. Direct detection of extrasolar terrestrial planets appears theoretically feasible on a 2 to 3 m visible-wavelength telescope in space.

Apodized Pupil Lyot Coronagraph Working Without Lyot Stop

Aims. In the context of high contrast imaging, we propose to evaluate the performance of the Apodized Pupil Lyot Coronagraph (APLC) working without Lyot Stop, namely Stop-less Lyot Coronagraph (SLLC). This coronagraph is a combination of an entrance pupil apodizer and an opaque mask in the following focal plane. However, contrary to APLC, SLLC is amputated by the traditional pupil stop. Our goa...

SPICA infrared coronagraph for the direct observation of exo-planets

We present a mid-infrared coronagraph to target the direct observation of extrasolar planets, for Space Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA). SPICA is a proposed JAXA-ESA mission, which will carry a telescope cooled to 5K with a 3.5m diameter aperture, and is planed to be launched in 2017 by an H II-A rocket. The SPICA mission gives us a unique opportunity for high-contrast...

High contrast imaging lab

The vortex coronagraph is a transparent phase-based coronagraph which imprints an eilθ phase ramp (or screw dislocation) on the point spread function (PSF) of the telescope+instrument. l is called the topological charge of the vortex, and quantifies the number of times the phase goes through 2π radians. For the vortex to be an efficient coronagraph, the topological charge has to be a non-zero e...

Wavefront Correction in a Shaped-Pupil Coronagraph Using a Gerchberg-Saxton-Based Estimation Scheme

The detection of extra-solar terrestrial planets requires the use of space-based high-contrast imaging. Stellar photon noise as well as light thrown about by system aberrations necessitate the use of a high quality light suppression system and a method for wavefront correction. We present here a wavefront estimation scheme to be used with estimate-based correction for the shaped pupil coronagra...

Apodized phase mask coronagraphs for arbitrary apertures. II. Comprehensive review of solutions for the vortex coronagraph

With a clear circular aperture, the vortex coronagraph perfectly cancels an on-axis point source and offers a 0.9 or 1.75 λ/D inner working angle for topological charge 2 or 4, respectively. Current and near-future large telescopes are on-axis, however, and the diffraction effects of the central obscuration, and the secondary supports are strong enough to prevent the detection of companions 10−...
