Phase-Induced Amplitude Apodization of Telescope Pupils for Extrasolar Terrestrial Planet Imaging

چکیده
In this paper, an alternative to the classical pupil apodization techniques (use of an amplitude pupil mask) is proposed. It is shown that an apodized pupil suitable for imaging of Extrasolar planets can be obtained by reflection of an unapodized flat wavefront on 2 mirrors. By carefully choosing the shape of these 2 mirrors, it is possible to obtain a contrast better than 109 at a distance smaller than 2λ/d from the optical axis. Because this technique preserves both the angular resolution and light gathering capabilities of the unapodized pupil, it allows efficient detection of terrestrial extrasolar planets with a 1.5m telescope in the visible.

Diffraction of Apodized Pupil Mapping Systems with Aberrations
Pupil mapping is a promising and unconventional new method for high contrast imaging being considered for terrestrial exoplanet searches. It employs two (or more) specially designed aspheric mirrors to create a high-contrast amplitude profile across the telescope pupil that does not appreciably attenuate amplitude. As such, it reaps significant benefits in light collecting efficiency and inner ...

متن کاملOptimal Occulter Design for Finding Extrasolar Planets
One proposed method for finding terrestrial planets around nearby stars is to use two spacecraft—a telescope and a specially shaped occulter, whose shape is specially designed to prevent all but a tiny fraction of the starlight from diffracting into the telescope. As the cost and observing cadence for such a mission will be driven largely by the separation between the two spacecraft, it is crit...

In this paper we examine several different apodization approaches to achieving high-contrast imaging of extrasolar planets and compare different designs on a selection of performance metrics. These approaches are characterized by their use of the pupil’s transmission function to focus the starlight rather than by masking the star in the image plane as in a classical coronagraph. There are two b...
متن کاملTwo-Mirror Apodization for High-Contrast Imaging
Direct detection of extrasolar planets will require imaging systems capable of unprecedented contrast. Apodized pupils provide an attractive way to achieve such contrast but they are difficult, perhaps impossible, to manufacture to the required tolerance and they absorb about 90% of the light in order to create the apodization, which of course lengthens the exposure times needed for planet dete...
