چکیده

OBJECTIVE The aim was to study the prevalence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella zoster virus (VZV) seropositive patients among diabetic patients with acute peripheral facial paralysis (APFP) as compared to non-diabetics with APFP and a healthy control group. METHODS Participants consisted of 40 diabetic patients and 40 non-diabetic patients with APFP from Hai Al-Jamea Hospital, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia studied over a period from July 2000 to December 2001. In addition, 20 age and sex matched healthy volunteers were included as a control group. Paired sera were obtained from all participants within the first 4 days of the illness (acute phase) and 2-3 weeks later (convalescent phase). Paired sera were also obtained from the control group within an equivalent period. Detection of immunoglobulin (Ig) M and IgG class antibodies to HSV and VZV in these sera was carried out using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays kits. The demonstration of IgM antibodies, 2-fold elevations of IgG antibodies or both was considered positive evidence for virus infection. RESULTS The present study has shown that there was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of HSV-seropositive patients in the diabetic and non-diabetic patients with Bell`s palsy; however, it was significantly higher in both groups than in the healthy control group. There were no statistically significant differences in the prevalence of VZV-seropositive patients among the 3 groups. CONCLUSION The significantly high prevalence of HSV-seropositive patients among the diabetic as well as the non-diabetic patients with Bell`s palsy suggests an equally important role of HSV infection in the pathogenesis of Bell`s palsy in the diabetic as in the non-diabetic patients.

Varicella-zoster virus reactivation is an important cause of acute peripheral facial paralysis in children.

BACKGROUND Reactivation of herpes simplex virus type 1 is thought to be a major cause of adult idiopathic peripheral facial paralysis or Bell's palsy. However, few studies have examined the pathogenesis of this condition in children. Serologic assays and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of paired sera and saliva samples were used here to investigate the causes of acute peripheral facial...

Prevalence of Herpes Simplex Virus type-1, 2 and Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) in Eye Infection

Abstract Background and Aims: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a common cause of corneal disease and is the leading infectious cause of corneal blindness among developed nations. This study is aimed to provide an estimation of the incidence of Herpes Simplex Virustype-1, 2(HSV1, 2) and Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) in tears and swab from eye infection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in eye ...

Early and reliable detection of herpes simplex virus type 1 and varicella zoster virus DNAs in oral fluid of patients with idiopathic peripheral facial nerve palsy: Decision support regarding antiviral treatment?

Idiopathic peripheral facial nerve palsy has been associated with the reactivation of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or varicella zoster virus (VZV). In recent studies, detection rates were found to vary strongly which may be caused by the use of different oral fluid collection devices in combination with molecular assays lacking standardization. In this single-center pilot study, liquid p...

Bilateral Ramsay Hunt syndrome in a diabetic patient

BACKGROUND: Herpes zoster oticus accounts for about 10% cases of facial palsy, which is usually unilateral and complete and full recovery occurs in only about 20% of untreated patients. Bilateral herpes zoster oticus can sometime occur in immunocompromised patients, though incidence is very rare. CASE PRESENTATION: Diabetic male, 57 year old presented to us with bilateral facial palsy due to he...

Seroprevalence of Varicella-Zoster Virus in Children from Shiraz-Iran

Background: Varicella–zoster virus (VZV) causes herpes zoster and varicella (Chicken-pox), usually a mild disease which is diagnosed clinically with few complications. However, in neonates and healthy adults it can have a severe presentation. Herpes zoster results from VZV reactivation later in life. Objective: To determine the seroprevalence of VZV in elementary school children aged 6-10 years...
