Red Queen Pricing Effects in E-Retail Markets

چکیده
A standard “solution” offered to the deleterious effects of all-out price competition is for firms to engage in differentiation strategies. This solution, however, depends critically on the inability of rivals to imitate a successful differentiation strategy. With imitation, we show how “Red Queen” pricing effects can arise: All firms have an incentive to vertically differentiate and increase markups, yet imitation by rivals drives prices down toward pre-differentiation levels. Thus, the price premia arising from differentiation strategies in eretailing critically depend on the number of other firms that imitate the strategies. Based on data from Shopper.com, we find that an online firm that unilaterally differentiates itself from its rivals by participating in CNet’s Certified Merchant program enjoys a 5 to 17 percent price premium. However, when other firms also follow this strategy, the price premium vanishes. JEL Numbers: D4, D8, M3, L13.

Odd Prices at Retail Gasoline Stations: Focal Point Pricing and Tacit Collusion
This study empirically investigates the theory that odd numbered pricing points can be used as focal points to facilitate tacit collusion. Odd ending prices are heavily used in many retail markets. While the demand e ects of odd pricing points are commonly studied, their potential role in the coordination of prices is rarely discussed. I show that gasoline stations in the U.S. disproportionatel...
متن کاملUtility regulation and input price risk: The roles of marginal cost pricing and futures markets
The paper assesses the welfare effects of different ways of allocating input price risk between a regulated utility, consumers and speculators in a futures market. A risk-averse utility setting a fixed retail price requires a price that exceeds expected marginal cost, unless an efficient futures market is available. The firm bears no risk when input price risk is transferred to consumers, but c...
متن کاملEdgeworth Price Cycles, Cost-based Pricing and Sticky Pricing in Retail Gasoline Markets
This paper examines dynamic pricing behavior in retail gasoline markets for 19 Canadian cities over 574 weeks. I find three distinct retail pricing patterns: 1. standard cost-based pricing, 2. sticky pricing, and 3. steep, asymmetric retail price cycles that, while seldom documented empirically, resemble those of Maskin & Tirole [1988]. I use a Markov switching regression to estimate the preval...
متن کاملZONE PRICING IN RETAIL OLIGOPOLY By
We quantify the welfare effects of zone pricing, or setting common prices across distinct markets, in retail oligopoly. Although monopolists can only increase profits by price discriminating, this need not be true when firms face competition. With novel data covering the retail home improvement industry, we find that Home Depot would benefit from finer pricing but that Lowe’s would prefer coars...

The study seeks to inductively develop a model of regular price decision-making in grocery retailing.
