Polarimetric Decompositions for Soil Moisture Retrieval from Vegetated Soils in TERENO Observatories

چکیده
A refined hybrid polarimetric decomposition and inversion method for soil moisture estimation under vegetation is investigated for its potential to retrieve soil moisture from vegetated soils in TERENO observatories. The refined algorithm is applied on Lband fully polarimetric data acquired by DLR’s novel F-SAR sensor. Two flight and field measurement campaigns were conducted in 2011 and 2012 for the TERENO Harz, Eifel and DEMMIN observatories, located all across Germany. The applied algorithm reveals distinct potential to invert soil moisture with inversion rates higher than >98% for a variety of crop types, phenological conditions and for pronounced topography. A quality assessment is conducted by validation with FDR, TDR and a wireless soil moisture network. The RMSE stays below 6.1vol.% for the different test sites and data takes including a variety of vegetation types in different phenological stages.

Polarimetric Soil Moisture Retrieval at Short Wavelength
Soil moisture was assessed with quad-polarimetric TerraSAR-X and dual-polarimetric (HH/VV) TanDEM-X data from the agricultural region of Wallerfing, Germany. The investigations included a bare soil case in April 2009 (TerraSAR-X) and a time series of 04-07/2011 (TanDEM-X) to estimate soil moisture on bare and vegetated soils including different agricultural crop types at various phenological st...
متن کاملEvaluation of Simplified Polarimetric Decomposition for Soil Moisture Retrieval over Vegetated Agricultural Fields
This paper investigates a simplified polarimetric decomposition for soil moisture retrieval over agricultural fields. In order to overcome the coherent superposition of the backscattering contributions from vegetation and underlying soils, a simplification of an existing polarimetric decomposition is proposed in this study. It aims to retrieve the soil moisture by using only the surface scatter...
متن کاملExploring the Validity Range of the Polarimetric Two-scale Two- Component Model for Soil Moisture Retrieval by Using Agrisar Data
The recently proposed polarimetric two-scale twocomponent model (PTSTCM) in principle allows us obtaining a reasonable estimation of the soil moisture even in moderately vegetated areas, where the volumetric scattering contribution is non-negligible, provided that the surface component is dominant and the double-bounce component is negligible. Here we test the PTSTCM validity range by applying ...
متن کاملEstimation of soil parameters over bare agriculture areas from C-band polarimetric SAR data using neural networks
The purpose of this study was to develop an approach to estimate soil surface parameters from C-band polarimetric SAR data in the case of bare agricultural soils. An inversion technique based on multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural networks was introduced. The neural networks were trained and validated on a noisy simulated dataset generated from the Integral Equation Model (IEM) on a wide range ...
