Activated Sludge Treatment of Paper Mill Effluents
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction The pulp and paper industry is the second largest industrial water consumer in Europe with a usage of 35 m3/ton paper and a production of 85.2 M tons/year. Its effluents cause considerable damage to the receiving waters if discharged untreated since they have a high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and contain chlorinated compounds, suspended solids (mainly fibres), fatty acids, lignin, and sulphur compounds. Environmental legislation has affected the pulp and paper industry. A number of UK mills are authorised under Integrated Pollution Control (IPC), so they have to demonstrate that they are using best available techniques not entailing excessive cost (BATNEEC) to control emissions to the environment. The use of primary treatment followed by secondary biological treatment, which is the approach adopted by UK mills, is considered to be BATNEEC for the industry.

Effect of Metal Salt Coagulants on Treatment of Activated Sludge Effluent in Sulfite Mill Pulp and Paper Plant
Pulp and paper effluents are considered as serious environmental hazards and their treatment, because of multiplicity of impurities and complexity of their chemical structures, is one of the most difficult and inconvenient industrial processes. As the most pulp and paper mill work on kraft process, there are few studies in literature on the treatment of neural sulfite semi chemical (NSSC) p...

The majority of pulp and paper mills now biotreat their combined effluents using activated sludge. On the assumption that their wood-based effluents have negligible fixed N, and that activated-sludge microorganisms will not fix significant N, these mills routinely spend large amounts adding ammonia or urea to their aeration tanks (bioreactors) to permit normal biomass growth. N(2) fixation in s...
متن کاملKraft pulp mill effluent treated by activated sludge and aerated lagoon genotoxicity assess
Organic compounds present in the bleached kraft pulp mill (BKPM) effluents may be reduced by biological treatment like: activated sludge (AS) or aerated lagoon (AL). However, after biological treatment, BKPM effluent still contains specific compounds. Some of them have been related with chronic effects (DNA damage, reproductive and physiological) observed on fishes exposed to BKPM effluents. Th...

Eucalyptus bleached kraft pulp production, an important sector of the Brazilian national economy, is responsible for generating large volume, high pollutant load effluents, containing a considerable fraction of recalcitrant organic matter. The objectives of this study were to quantify the biological activity of the effluent from a eucalyptus bleached kraft pulp mill, characterize the nature of ...
متن کاملHeavy and toxic metals analysis from effluent of paper mill, based on cotton comber and cotton linter raw materials
The present study deals with effluent analysis of a paper mill using cotton comber and cotton linter as raw material for paper manufacturing process. The effluents generated at different stages were collected. The fibrous sludge samples recovered in different section of mill were also collected. The inorganic parameters i.e. alkalinity, hardness, sulphate, chloride, phosptahe, sodium, potassium...
متن کاملAdsorption of Phenolic Compounds onto the Activated Carbon Synthesized from Pulp and Paper Mill Sludge: Equilibrium Isotherm, Kinetics, Thermodynamics and Mechanism Studies
A new activated carbon was produced from pulp and paper mill sludge as a low cost precursor via chemical activation by zinc chloride. The activated carbon was successfully used for the adsorption of phenol and two of its derivatives, i.e. 2-chlorophenol and 4-nitrophenol from aqueous solutions. The characterization of the prepared activated carbon demonstrated high textural properties for the s...
