Nitrogen Gas: A Possible Contraindication In Bubble Oxygenators

چکیده

An ultrasonic Doppler was used to monitor embolic activity in the arterial line of an extracorporeal circuit. No differences in embolic activity were observed when either 100% N2 or 95% Oz-5% C02 gases were swept through a bubble oxygenator. Information is presented suggesting that nitrogen or air micro emboli are more deleterious than oxygen or carbogen microemboli. Consequently, this article recommends that the use of compressed air or nitrogen should be contraindicated in bubble oxygenators. Since the cardiotomy suction is a major source of nitrogen microemboli, this article also emphasizes that the cardiotomy suction be minimized and that a pressurized cardiotomy return be prevented from directly entering the oxygenator.

Gaseous micro emboli: concepts and considerations.

The production of gaseous micro emboli associated with bubble oxygenators during extracorporeal perfusion has prompted considerable attention regarding product design and arterial filtration needs. There are a variety of routes by which gas bubbles are introduced into the vasculature. As invasive diagnostics and extracorporeal perfusion are used more widely, likewise, the incidence of gas embol...

Oxygen or nitrogen: which is the lesser of two evils?

Ever since it was discovered in the 1770s, the risks and benefits of oxygen have been hotly debated (1). The article by Young, “Hyperoxia—A Review of Risk and Benefits,” the author addresses this important question: What is the optimal oxygen management strategy for cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB)? Surprisingly, after 60 years of clinical experience, there is still disagreement on the optimal part...

An in vitro method to quantitate gaseous microemboli production of bubble oxygenators. 1982.

____________ _ An in vitro method to collect and quantify volumes of gaseous microemboli generated by a bubble oxygenator has been developed. Gaseous microemboli generated by a bubble oxygenator are captured and collected in a vortex separation test cell. The cells are pressurized and the resultant pressure changes are converted to volume gas readings using a standard calibration curve. A doppl...
