Cosmic Covariance and the Low Quadrupole Anisotropy of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (wmap) Data

چکیده
The quadrupole power of cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies seen in the WMAP data is puzzlingly low. In this paper we demonstrate that Minimum Variance Optimization (MVO), a technique used by many authors (including the WMAP science team) to separate the CMB from contaminating foregrounds, has the effect of forcing the extracted CMB map to have zero statistical correlation with the foreground emission. Over an ensemble of universes the true CMB and foreground are indeed expected to be uncorrelated, but any particular sky pattern (such as the one we happen to observe) will generate non-zero measured correlations simply by chance. We call this effect “cosmic covariance” and it is a possible source of bias in the CMB maps cleaned using the MVO technique. We show that the presence of cosmic covariance is expected to artificially suppress the variance of the Internal Linear Combination (ILC) map obtained via MVO. It also propagates into the multipole expansion of the ILC map, generating a quadrupole deficit with more than 90% confidence. Since we do not know the CMB and the foregrounds a priori, there is therefore an unknown contribution to the uncertainty in the measured quadrupole power, over and above the usual cosmic variance contribution. Using the MVO on a series of Monte Carlo simulations that assume Gaussian CMB fluctuations, we estimate that the real quadrupole power of the CMB lies in the range [305.16, 400.40](μK) (at the 1− σ level). Systematical effects in WMAP data
Previously, by re-analyzing the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) raw data, we have seen significantly different cosmic microwave background (CMB) results to the WMAP official release, especially at the largest-scale structure detectable for the CMB anisotropy the l = 2 component, which is also called the CMB quadrupole. In this article, we first introduce the discovered differences, ...
متن کاملAnomalous Parity Asymmetry of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe Power Spectrum Data at Low Multipoles
We have investigated non-Gaussianity of our early universe by comparing the parity asymmetry of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) power spectrum with simulations. We find that odd-parity preference of the WMAP data (2 l 18) is anomalous at 4-in-1000 level. We find it likely that low quadrupole power is part of this parity asymmetry rather than an isolated anomaly. Further investig...
متن کامل2 - point anisotropies in WMAP and the Cosmic Quadrupole
Large-scale modes in the temperature anisotropy power spectrum C l measured by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), seem to have lower amplitudes (C 2 , C 3 and C 4) than that expected in the so called concordance ΛCDM model. In particular, the quadrupole C 2 is reported to have a smaller value than allowed by cosmic variance. This has been interpreted as a possible indication of ne...
متن کاملGenus Topology of the Cosmic Microwave Background from WMAP
We have independently measured the genus topology of the temperature fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background seen by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP). A genus analysis of the WMAP data indicates consistency with Gaussian random-phase initial conditions, as predicted by standard inflation. متن کاملIs the Low CMB Quadrupole a Signature of Spatial Curvature?
The temperature anisotropy power spectrum measured with the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) at high multipoles is in spectacular agreement with an inflationary Λ-dominated cold dark matter cosmology. However, the low order multipoles (especially the quadrupole) have lower amplitudes than expected from this cosmology, indicating a need for new physics. Here we speculate that the low ...
