Chandra Detections of Two Quiescent Black Hole X-ray Transients

چکیده
Using the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, we have detected the black hole transients V4641 Sgr and XTE J1859 226 in their low-luminosity quiescent states. The 0.3–8 keV luminosities are (d/7 kpc) ergs s 1 and 3.3 31 (4.0 ) # 10 2.4 (d/11 kpc) ergs s 1 for V4641 Sgr and XTE J1859 226, respectively. With the addition of 4.8 31 (4.2 ) # 10 2.2 these two systems, 14 out of the 15 transients with confirmed black holes (via compact object mass measurements) now have measured quiescent luminosities or sensitive upper limits. The only exception is GRS 1915 105, which has not been in quiescence since its discovery in 1992. The luminosities for V4641 Sgr and XTE J1859 226 are consistent with the median luminosity of ergs s 1 for the systems with previous detections. Our 31 2 # 10 analysis suggests that the quiescent X-ray spectrum of V4641 Sgr is harder than for the other systems in this group, but because of the low statistical quality of the spectrum, it is not clear if V4641 Sgr is intrinsically hard or if the column density is higher than the interstellar value. Focusing on V4641 Sgr, we compare our results to theoretical models for X-ray emission from black holes in quiescence. Also, we obtain precise X-ray positions for V4641 Sgr and XTE J1859 226 via cross-correlation of the X-ray sources detected near our targets with IR sources in the Two Micron All Sky Survey catalog. Subject headings: accretion, accretion disks — black hole physics — stars: individual (V4641 Sgr, XTE J1859 226) — stars: winds, outflows — X-rays: stars

X-rays from quiescent low-mass X-ray binary transients
I argue that it is very unlikely that X-rays from quiescent black-hole low-mass X-ray binary transients are emitted by coronae of companion stars. I show that in a simple model in which these X-rays are emitted by an ADAF filling the inner part of an unsteady, dwarf-nova type disc, the X-ray luminosity is correlated with the orbital period. I predict what values of X-ray luminosities from black...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملChandra observation of the fast X - ray transient IGR J 17544 - 2619
IGR J17544-2619 belongs to a distinct group of at least seven fast X-ray transients that cannot readily be associated with nearby flare stars or pre-main sequence stars and most probably are X-ray binaries with wind accretion. Sofar, the nature of the accretor has been determined in only one case (SAX J1819.3-2525/V4641 Sgr). We carried out a 20 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of IGR J17544-2619 ...
متن کاملOn the origin of black hole X - ray emission in quiescence : Chandra observations of XTE J 1550 − 564 and H 1743 −
We report the results of observations of the black hole binaries XTE J1550−564 and H 1743−322 in their quiescent state using the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Both sources are detected at their faintest level of X-ray emission ever observed with a 0.5–10 keV unabsorbed luminosity of 2 × 10 32 (d/5 kpc) 2 erg s −1 for XTE J1550−564 and 9 × 10 31 (d/8 kpc) 2 erg s −1 for H 1743−322. These luminositi...
متن کاملXMM - Newton observations of two black hole X - ray transients in quiescence
We report on XMM-Newton observations of GRO J1655-40 and GRS 1009-45, which are two black hole X-ray transients currently in their quiescent phase. GRO J1655-40 was detected with a 0.5-10 keV luminosity of 5.9 × 10 31 erg s −1. This luminosity is comparable to a previous Chandra measurement, but ten times lower than the 1996 ASCA value, most likely obtained when the source was not yet in a true...
