Ancient Schwannoma of the Female Pelvis Simulating Ovarian Neoplasm: MR Imaging Characteristics and Points of Differential Diagnosis

چکیده
[Introduction and Purpose] Schwannoma, also referred to as neurilemoma and neurinoma, is a benign nerve sheath tumor which usually occur in the soft tissues of the head and neck and extremities. When the tumors are located in deep structures such as the mediastinum and the retroperitoneum, those tend to be larger masses with degenerative changes as ancient (degenerated) schwannoma. Because schwannomas are usually asymptomatic neurologically, deeply situated tumors are hardly diagnosed in early stage and often become considerably larger with long duration. Ancient schwannomas are encapsulated masses and manifest secondary degenerative changes including cyst formation, calcification and hemorrhage on cut sections. The majority of female pelvic masses arise from reproductive tract, but gastrointestinal, mesenteric, urinary and primary extraperitoneal origin tumors also occur and may mimic gynecologic diseases. Especially masses with cystic nature may closely resemble ovarian neoplasm. Primary extraperitoneal neoplasms are rare and comprise various histologic origins. In the tumors, ancient schwannomas may tend to be mistaken for ovarian disease clinically, because the patients are usually asymptomatic and ultrasonography reveals as cystic masses. Diagnosis before surgical treatment is important for postoperative neurological difficulties often develop. The purpose of this study is to establish the MRI diagnosis of this rare neoplasm.

I-45: Important Points in Interpretation of Sonographic Images of Female Pelvis (Imaging Case Review)
Ultrasonography represents the method of choice in the investigation of the female pelvis. An accurate interpretation of the images must take into consideration the specific features of the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. The present case review aims to demonstrate important points in interpretation and management of the female pelvis images.

Acute Female pelvic pain is one the common causes of referral to emergency ward. It has many ethiologies of either Gynaecological or non gynecological causes including normal ovulation, haemorrhagic/ruptured ovarian cyst, Tumour, infarction (leiomyoma), Ovarian torsion, ectopic pregnancy, Tubo-ovarian abscess/PID, Endometriosis, … etc. It also has non-gynaecological causes such as renal stones,...
متن کاملPnm-6: Eight Sonographic Key Points That Every Midwife or Nurse Needs to Know
Background: Ultrasound is preferred as first imaging modality in the study of the female pelvis. In this article, we have tried to mention 8 points that each midwife or nurse needs to know for planning the time of sonography and analysis of findings. Results: During the menstrual cycle, all pelvic organs are influenced by cyclic changes. Thus, pathologic conditions of pelvis need to be well ass...
متن کاملAncient Olfactory Schwannoma - Case Report and Literature Review.
Intracranial schwannomas are benign tumors that arise from Schwann cells. Since it is well known that optic and olfactory nerves do not have a Schwann cell sheath, schwannoma should not develop from these nerves. We report a very unusual case of a 73-year-old female who presented with generalized seizures and had radiological features of an intracranial aneurysm. Additional imaging showed an ex...
متن کاملAncient Schwannoma of the Trigeminal Nerve Mimicking High Grade Lesion
Ancient schwannomas rarely found in the central nervous system and ancient change in an intracranial schwannoma (intracranial portion of the trigeminal nerve) is extremely rare. A seventy-year man presented with headache of 3 months duration and one episode of generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Imaging findings were suggestive of left temporal high grade lesion. During surgery there was well...
