چکیده

Several methodological difficulties and inherent variation in the relevant entomological phenomenon, however, are still likely to confront a forensic entomologist and should be considered when using insects to estimate the postmortem interval (PMI) (1) Animals as models for human corpses, (2) Replicated carcasses, (3) Manner of death (4) Nocturnal oviposition of flies (5) Species identifications (6) Age determination of maggots and (7) Foreign chemicals as a source of error. The solution of such problems needs innovation experimental designs and careful investigations in future forensic entomology research. This article reviews these important and common problems along with some approaches to their solution.

Forensic entomology and main challenges in Brazil.

Apart from an early case report from China (13th century), the first observations on insects and other arthropods as forensic indicators were documented in Germany and France during mass exhumations in the 1880s by Reinhard, who is considered a co-founder of the discipline. After the French publication of Mégnin's popular book on the applied aspects of forensic entomology, the concept quickly s...

Forensic entomology in Germany.

Forensic entomology (FE) is increasingly gaining international recognition. In Germany, however, the development of FE has been stagnating, mainly because of the lack of cooperation between police, forensic medicine and entomology. In 1997 a co-operative research project 'Forensic Entomology' was started in Frankfurt/Main at the Center of Legal Medicine and the Research Institute Senckenberg. T...

Evidential calibration process of multi-agent based system: An application to forensic entomology

Forensic entomology consists, during a criminal investigation, in studying the insects found on a cadaver to estimate the time of death. This is the only technique that can be used for a large post-morten interval. But, because of the important system complexity, the result given by the expert are imperfect. In this paper, a Decision Support System (DSS) has been developed to take into account ...

Neglect of the elderly: forensic entomology cases and considerations.

Wounds of living persons are a potential target for the same flies that live, or feed early on corpses. This can lead to complications in estimation of PMI but also allows to determine additional information that might be valuable in a trial, or during the investigations [e.g., M. Benecke, R. Lessig, Child neglect and forensic entomology, Forensic Sci. Int. 120 (2001) 155-159]. With forensic en...

The use of Megaselia abdita (Diptera: Phoridae) in forensic entomology.

This case study demonstrates the importance of the Phorid, Megaselia abdita (Schmitz), as an indicator for post-mortem interval estimation in criminal investigations involving forensic entomology where it is usually the more frequently occurring Calliphorids that are most useful. A case example is discussed where the temperatures were low for the period of time the deceased was missing.
