Accretion in stellar clusters and the IMF

چکیده
We present a simple physical mechanism that can account for the observed stellar mass spectrum for masses M∗>∼ 0.5M⊙. The model depends solely on the competitive accretion that occurs in stellar clusters where each star’s accretion rate depends on the local gas density and the square of the accretion radius. In a stellar cluster, there are two different regimes depending on whether the gas or the stars dominate the gravitational potential. When the cluster is dominated by cold gas, the accretion radius is given by a tidal-lobe radius. This occurs as the cluster collapses towards a ρ ∝ R distribution. Accretion in this regime results in a mass spectrum with an asymptotic limit of γ = −3/2 (where Salpeter is γ = −2.35). Once the stars dominate the potential and are virialised, which occurs first in the cluster core, the accretion radius is the Bondi-Hoyle radius. The resultant mass spectrum has an asymptotic limit of γ = −2 with slightly steeper slopes (γ ≈ −2.5) if the stars are already masssegregated. Simulations of accretion onto clusters containing 1000 stars show that as expected, the low-mass stars accumulate the majority of their masses during the gas dominated phase whereas the high-mass stars accumulate the majority of their massed during the stellar dominated phase. This results in a mass spectrum with a relatively shallow γ ≈ 3/2 power-law for low-mass stars and a steeper, power-law for high-mass stars −2.5 <∼ γ ≤ −2. This competitive accretion model also results in a mass segregated cluster.

Competitive Accretion and the Imf
Competitive accretion occurs when stars in a cluster accrete from a shared reservoir of gas. The competition arises due to the relative attraction of stars as a function of their mass and location in the cluster. The low relative motions of the stars and gas in young, gas dominated clusters results in a tidal limit to the accretion whereas in the stellar dominated cluster cores, the high relati...
متن کاملThe Stellar Initial Mass Function
The current status of both the observational evidence and the theory of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) is reviewed, with particular attention to the two basic, apparently universal features shown by all observations of nearby stellar systems: (1) a characteristic stellar mass of the order of one solar mass, and (2) a power-law decline of the IMF at large masses similar to the original ...
متن کاملCompetitive Accretion in Clusters and the IMF
Observations have revealed that most stars are born in clusters. As these clusters typically contain more mass in gas than in stars, accretion can play an important role in determining the final stellar masses. Numerical simulations of gas accretion in stellar clusters have found that the stars compete for the available reservoir of gas. The accretion rates are highly nonuniform and are determi...

متن کاملVariability in the stellar initial mass function at low and high mass: 3-component IMF models
Three component models of the IMF are made to consider possible origins for the observed relative variations in the numbers of brown dwarfs, solar-to-intermediate mass stars, and high mass stars. The differences between the IMFs observed for clusters, field, and remote field are also discussed. Three distinct physical processes that should dominate the three stellar mass regimes are noted. The ...
