ROBERT A. HANEY Mine Safety and Health Administration, Pittsburgh Health Technology Center The effectiveness of these dust control techniques has been evaluated primarily through the use of instantaneous dust measurements. These instantaneous dust measurements give a relative indication of whether dust control and -------------------~ employee exposure improve or deteriorate. Because the instantaneous measurements are a relative indication of conA systematic approach for correlating dust generated on a longwall face to personal employee exposure has been developed. The correlation is made through the use of a mathematical model that takes into consideration the magnitude of dust generation sourees, exposure time to the source and the relative position of the worker with respect to the source. The correlation is facilitated through the use of an interal!tive computer program. The use and application of the program is demonstrated from several field studies conducted on longwall mining sections. The effect of various longwall dust control techniques such as dilution with airflow, internal and external spray systems on the shearer and remote control on the shearer are presented.

Study to Assess Respirable Dust Exposures in Underground U.S. Coal Mines
In 1991 the Mine Safety and Health Administration conducted a special program to assess occupational exposures to respirable coal mine dust in underground coal mines. Priority was given to longwall mining operations, mines with a history ofhaving a problem controlling dust to the applicable standard, and a representative number of all other mines. Measurements were obtained on approximately 720...
متن کاملA Comparative Evaluation of the Differential-pressure-based Respirable Dust Dosimeter with the Personal Gravimetric Respirable Dust Sampler in Underground Coal Mines
The development of a sampling instrument for the assessment of an underground coal miner’s exposure to airborne respirable coal mine dust on a continuous and real-time basis has been long identified as essential for timely initiation of control actions. A respirable dust dosimeter (RDD) which operates on the principle of increasing pressure across a filter media with increasing dust mass on the...

متن کاملThe Effect of Exposure to Respirable Dust on Blood Parameters of Workers in a Tile and Ceramic Industryin, Yazd
Introduction: The relationship between elevated level of gas and particulate pollutants with increased mortality resulting from cardiovascular and respiratory diseases has been presented in epidemiological studies. Although the principal mechanisms of diseases are still unknown, inflammatory and homeostatic processes have been known to be related to this issue. Accordingly, this study was condu...
متن کاملOccupational and biological monitoring of workers exposed to airborne dust in Gol-e-Gohar Iron Ore mine: A Case-Control Study
Background and aims: Mining is categorized with considerable exposure to airborne contaminations. Regarding the high prevalence of diseases and the high population of workers in iron ore mines, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of miners’ exposure to respirable dust compounds on the serum Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Methods: In this study, 92 non-smoker healthy workers of G...
