چکیده

Histologic subtype has emerged as a potential prognostic and/or predictive factor in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Several studies support the importance of differentiating between squamous and non-squamous NSCLC in terms of efficacy of chemotherapeutics (e.g. pemetrexed) or treatment-related toxicities (e.g. bevacizumab). In addition, molecular markers and gene profiles have been correlated with histologic subtype. This review examines the emerging clinical significance of histologic type in the management of NSCLC, discusses caveats in accurate histologic diagnosis, and reviews biomarkers with potential predictive value for NSCLC chemotherapeutics.

Survival by histologic subtype in stage IV nonsmall cell lung cancer based on data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Program

BACKGROUND The role of histology in the targeted management of nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has garnered renewed attention in recent years. We provide contemporary population-based estimates of survival and an assessment of important prognostic factors in stage IV NSCLC by major histologic subtype. METHODS Using data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program, we ...

Targeted therapies for patients with advanced NSCLC harboring wild-type EGFR: what’s new and what’s enough

Historically, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is divided into squamous and nonsquamous subtypes based on histologic features. With a growing number of oncogenic drivers being identified in squamous and nonsquamous NSCLC, this malignancy has been recently divided into several distinct subtypes according to the specific molecular alterations. This new paradigm has substantially highlighted the...

Primary Leiomyosarcoma of the Kidney : A Case Report and Review of Literature

Primary sarcomas of the kidney are exceptional. Among renal sarcomas, leiomyosarcoma is the most common histologic subtype amounting to 50-60% of all cases. The tumor usually arises from either the renal capsule or smooth muscle tissue in the renal pelvic wall. In this paper, we report a patient with leiomyosarcoma of the kidney presented with non-specific abdominal pain and a palpable mass....

Primary embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the kidney in an adult:A case report

Primary rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the kidney is a rare malignant mesenchymal tumor with an aggressive clinical course. Adult renal RMS is typically a pleomorphic histologic subtype and only a few cases have ever been reported. We herein present a new case of renal RMS of the embryonal histologic subtype in a 26-year-old woman.

Biopsy and Mutation Detection Strategies in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

The emergence of new therapeutic agents for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) implies that histologic subtyping and molecular predictive testing are now essential for therapeutic decisions. Histologic subtype predicts the efficacy and toxicity of some treatment agents, as do genetic alterations, which can be important predictive factors in treatment selection. Molecular markers, such as epider...
