چکیده

Increasing amounts of glycoprotein synthesized from L-[ 3H]fucose injected into the cell body of R2, an identified Aplysia neuron, were found in the right pleuroabdominal connective . Autoradiography revealed that the glycoproteins were localized in the axon of R2. Glycoproteins appearing in the axon presumably were synthesized in the cell body, since no significant incorporation was observed when [ 3H]fucose was injected directly into the axon . [ 3H]glycoproteins were detected in the connective after a delay of I h after intrasomatic injection . Thereafter, transport from the cell body was rapid, and by 10 h after injection, 45% of the total neuronal [ 3 H]glycoprotein had appeared in the axon . By analysing the radioactivity in cell body and connective 4, 10, and 15 h after injection, we found that [ 3 H]glycoproteins were transported selectively compared to nonmacromolecular material . Sequential sectioning of the connective revealed that [ 3H]glycoproteins were transported in discrete waves . The population of membrane-associated [ 3 H]glycoproteins in the axon differed from that in the cell body. Two of the five somatic components appeared to be transported preferentially . In addition a new component appeared in the axon 10 h after injection .

Characterization of glycolipids synthesized in an identified neuron of Aplysia californica.

Because radioactive precursors can be injected directly into the cell body or axon of R2, a giant, identified neuron of the Aplysia abdominal ganglion, it was possible to show that glycolipid is synthesized in the cell body, inserted into membranes along with glycoprotein, and then exported into the axon within organelles that are moved by fast axonal transport. After intrasomatic injection of ...

Metabolism of Acetylcholine in the Nervous System of Aplysia californica

A S s T RA C T [sH]Choline, injected directly into the major axon of the identified cholinergic neuron R2, was readily incorporated into [SH]acetylcholine. Its metabolic fate was similar to that o f [SH]choline injected into the cell body of R2. Over the range injected, we found that the amounts of acetylcholine formed were proportional to the amounts injected; the synthetic capability was not ...

Molecular Weight Distribution of Proteins Synthesized in Single, Identified Neurons of Aplysia

Parietovisceral ganglia from Aplysia californica were incubated in medium containing leucine-(3)H. Single, identified nerve cell somas were isolated from the ganglia, and their proteins extracted and separated by electrophoresis on 5% SDS-polyacrylamide gels. The distribution of total or newly synthesized proteins from the single neurons was determined by staining or slicing and liquid scintill...
