A comparison of large-scale spatial vegetation patterns following clearcuts and fires in Ontario’s boreal forests

چکیده
The role of wildfires as the most significant source of disturbance in boreal forests has been equaled by clearcuts during the past five decades. Post-disturbance revegetation patterns are important because they have a direct influence on many ecological processes. However, the knowledge of post-disturbance changes in spatial patterns of forest cover is scarce, especially at large scales. We examined spatial patterns of forest cover in a four decade series of post-fire and post-clearcut landscapes in boreal Canada. A suite of indices was used to quantify spatial patterns of post-disturbance vegetation, based on Landsat TM imagery, and edaphic conditions. Indices were grouped in terms of patch geometry, contagion and composition. We used a general linear model to compare the effects of disturbance type, time since disturbance, edaphic conditions, and their interactions on these indices. Clearcuts produced more heterogeneous landscapes after disturbances in comparison to fires. Time since disturbance also had a significant effect on spatial patterns of vegetation: the older disturbances had more landcover types with higher interspersion. Edaphic conditions also significantly affected spatial patterns of vegetation. Landscapes with complex spatial patterns of edaphic conditions also had complex spatial patterns of vegetation. # 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A Biogeochemical Examination of Ontario’s Boreal Forest Ecosite Classification System
The ecosite unit in Ontario‘s boreal forest ecological land classification system is a polygon of common vegetation type and soil conditions intended to provide a standardized provincial framework to inform meso-scale forestry and planning applications. To determine whether the physical factors used for ecosite classification relate to patterns in ecological function over finer spatial scales, ...
متن کاملMore Realistic than Anticipated: A Classical Forest-Fire Model from Statistical Physics Captures Real Fire Shapes
The quantitative study of wildfire data world wide revealed that wildfires exhibit power-law like frequencyarea distributions. Although models exist to predict the spread of a specific fire, there is as yet no agreement on the mechanism which drives wildfire systems on the landscape scale. A classical model in this context is the Drossel-Schwabl cellular automaton (DS-FFM) which robustly produc...
متن کاملRemote Sensing Techniques in Monitoring Post-Fire Effects and Patterns of Forest Recovery in Boreal Forest Regions: A Review
The frequency and severity of forest fires, coupled with changes in spatial and temporal precipitation and temperature patterns, are likely to severely affect the characteristics of forest and permafrost patterns in boreal eco-regions. Forest fires, however, are also an ecological factor in how forest ecosystems form and function, as they affect the rate and characteristics of tree recruitment....
متن کاملEstimating fire-related parameters in boreal forest using SPOT VEGETATION
The majority of burning in the boreal forest zone consists of stand replacement fires larger than 10 km occurring in remote, sparsely populated regions. Satellite remote sensing using coarse resolution (c 1 km) sensors is thus well suited in documenting the spatial and temporal distribution of fires in this zone. The purpose of this study was to investigate the utility of the SPOT VEGETATION (V...

Purpose of Review The goal was to synthesize the literature on wildland fires, how they create resilient landscape mosaics that affect ecosystem function and maintenance of biodiversity, and how the fires themselves are affected by wilderness edge effects and climate change. The emphasis is on coldtemperate and boreal forests. Recent Findings The interactions of fires with landforms create larg...
