چکیده

INTRODUCTION Knowledge of the nonlinear-elastic properties of soft tissues is essential for the development of reliable finite element models for biological systems. The compressive nonlinear-elastic properties of soft tissues are usually determined using unconfined compression tests. To determine the nonlinearelastic behavior of skin and subcutaneous tissues using a conventional approach, the skin and subcutaneous tissues have to be separated before testing [1,2,3]. Using such an approach, measurement errors may be increased as a consequence of the reduced specimen dimensions and cumulative experimental errors. In the present study, we propose a novel method to determine the nonlinear-elastic behaviors of the skin and the subcutaneous tissues simultaneously using specimens of skin/subcutaneous composites.

Laboratory testing of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete

Uniaxial and triaxial compression tests on steel fibre reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) have been used to quantify the elastic–plastic response behaviour for both the peak and post-peak regions. The laboratory tests were conducted with a servo-controlled testing machine to obtain complete stress–strain curves. The test results include unconfined and triaxial compressive strengths, shear strengths an...

Strain-rate dependent stiffness of articular cartilage in unconfined compression.

The stiffness of articular cartilage is a nonlinear function of the strain amplitude and strain rate as well as the loading history, as a consequence of the flow of interstitial water and the stiffening of the collagen fibril network. This paper presents a full investigation of the interplay between the fluid kinetics and fibril stiffening of unconfined cartilage disks by analyzing over 200 cas...

Estimation of Viscous Properties of Skin and Subcutaneous Tissues via Uniaxial Stress Relaxation Tests

INTRODUCTION Using traditional experimental methodologies [1,2,3], the skin has to be separated from the subcutaneous tissues in order to determine the tissues’ viscoelastic properties. Thus, the complex collagen fiber network in soft tissue could be damaged when the skin is separated from the subcutaneous tissue. Therefore, the viscoelastic properties of the skin and subcutaneous tissues measu...

Time-dependent mechanical characterization of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) hydrogels using nanoindentation and unconfined compression.

Hydrogels pose unique challenges to nanoindentation including sample preparation, control of experimental parameters, and limitations imposed by mechanical testing instruments and data analysis originally intended for harder materials. The artifacts that occur during nanoindentation of hydrated samples have been described, but the material properties obtained from hydrated nanoindentation have ...

Viscoelastic characterisation of pig liver in unconfined compression.

Understanding and modelling liver biomechanics represents a significant challenge due to the complex nature of this organ. Unfortunately, there is no consensus on liver viscoelastic properties, and results are strongly dependent on sample type and status, adopted testing method, and testing conditions. Standard force-triggered tests (e.g. step response or dynamic mechanical tests) necessitate a...
