Minimum Description Length Understanding of Infrared Scenes

چکیده

Our pattern theoretic approach to automatic target recognition for infrared scenes combines structured and unstruc-tured representations: rigid, 3-D faceted models for known targets of interest and exible, simply connected shapes to accommodate the unknown \clutterers" that the algorithm may encounter. The radiant intensities of both kinds of targets form nuisance variables which are incorporated into the parameter space. Statistical inference proceeds by simulating hypothesized scenes and comparing them to the collected data via a likelihood function. For a given target pose, we derive closed-form expressions for estimates of the thermodynamic variables via a weighted least-squares approximation. Since the number of objects in the scene, both rigid and exible, is unknown and must be estimated, the parameter space is a union of subspaces of varying dimension. Without constraints on the model order, scene descriptions may become too complex. We apply Rissanen's minimumdescription length (MDL) principle, which ooers a mathematical foundation for balancing the brevity of descriptions against their delity to the data. For continuous parameters, the description length involves the log-determinant of the empirical Fisher information matrix. The relationship of Rissanen's MDL to Schwartz's application of Laplace's method of integration and to the Cramer-Rao bound are discussed. Examples of likelihood surfaces and associated complexity penalties are given for synthetic tank data. In these experiments, the minimumdescription length approach correctly deduces the number of thermodynamic parameters.

The Study of Stage Description (Didascalia) in Tennessee Williams’ One Act Plays

Stage Description or, as Michael Issacharoff says, Didascalia, is a unique characteristic of Drama which has been part of plays from the beginning of the tradition of playwriting in mankind’s history. Didascalia in modern plays has found a complex function, helping playwrites as a technical tool as well as creating a richer vision of the characters, transfer plot in a betterr way, showing the c...

Translation and Hybridity in Scenes and Frames Semantics

The present study is a theoretical attempt to illustrate how Fillmore's Scenes and Frames Semantics (SFS) could be employed as a framework to portray the process of understanding and translating hybrid texts. It first reviews the origin of SFS; then it maps SFS onto Nida’s linguistic model of translation process and the Interpretive Theory of Translation; it examines in the next section, withi...

MDL Selection for Piecewise Planar Reconstruction

We present a three-step approach for the detection of 3D planes in image sequences of complex architectural scenes. In the first step 3D features (points or lines) are extracted from the images. A large number of potential planes are then fitted to the features in a second step. In the third step the relevant planes are selected with an algorithm based on the Minimum Description Length (MDL) pr...

Joint Distribution of Local Image Features for Appearance Modeling

We propose an improved local appearance and color modeling method, as an extension of Moghaddam & Zhou [lo], for object detection and recognition in cluttered scenes. The approach is based on the joint distribution of local feature vectors at multiple salient points and factorization with Independent Component Analysis (ICA). We we are able to obtain a tractable set of joint probability densiti...
