چکیده

Co-activation is the simultaneous activation of agonist and antagonist muscle groups around a joint, which contributes to joint stability and movement efficiency [1]. Co-activation becomes very important during ambulation and balance particularly around the knee. While certain levels of co-activation are normal in healthy populations, increased or reduced levels of co-activation may be associated with neuromuscular problems [2]. However, the wide range of methodological approaches for the quantification of co-activation makes comparison across studies and populations difficult. Most of the techniques that quantify coactivation index (CI) can be grouped within four categories, with normalization of each muscle with its respective maximum contraction to be considered the most advanced [2]. Nonetheless, there are still inconsistencies in smoothing techniques for the EMG signal. Root mean square (RMS) is the most commonly used smoothing approach [3] but the choice of RMS parameters may affect the reliability and meaning of results within and between sessions. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to determine withinand between-session reliability of different methodological approaches for the quantification of the CI of the thigh extensor and flexor muscles of the knee during maximum voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC).

Determination of Electromyography-Based Coordinated Fatigue Levels in Agonist and Antagonist Muscles of the Thigh during Squat Press Exercise

Background. Simultaneous tiredness of two or more muscles around a joint can be defined as coordinated fatigue (co-fatigue) and might occur between agonist and antagonist muscles, and vary according to the level of sporting activity levels or gender. Objectives. The aim of this study was to determine the levels of coordinated fatigue in agonist and antagonist muscles during squat-press exercis...

Effect of Ankle Brace on the Activity and Co-Contraction of Ankle Muscles During Single-Leg Landing

Objectives: The results of a few studies about the effects of ankle brace on muscles function during the performance of different tasks are contradictory. Moreover, the effect of brace on the co-contraction of ankle muscles is undiscovered. Therefore, the present study investigated the effect of brace usage on the ankle muscles activity and co-contraction during single-leg landing. Methods: Fi...

Reliability of surface electromyography during maximal voluntary isometric contractions, jump landings, and cutting.

The reliability of electromyographic (EMG) data has been examined for isometric and slow dynamic tasks, but little is known about the repeatability of this data for ballistic movements. The purpose of this study was to examine the within-session, trial-to-trial reliability of a variety of quadriceps and hamstrings muscles during isometric and ballistic activities. Data were analyzed by way of i...

The effect of isometric contractions of upper and lower limb muscles on the ultrasonic thickness of the transversus abdominis muscle

Background: The transverse abdominis (TrA) muscle is one of the most important muscles that contribute to the stability of the lumbar spine. Strengthening of trunk muscles that have a significant role in trunk stability is very important in the field of professional sport, sport medicine and rehabilitation of patient with low back pain (LBP). Identifying the exercises that can improve the stren...
