Analytic and Synthetic Verb Forms in Irish - An Agreement-Based Implementation in LFG

چکیده

This paper discusses the phenomenon of analytic and synthetic verb forms in Modern Irish, which results in a widespread system of morphological blocking. I present data from Modern Irish, then briefly discuss two earlier theoretical approaches. I introduce an alternative, agreement-based solution, involving 1) a finite-state morphological analyzer for verb forms implemented using the FST toolset (Beesley and Karttunen, 2003); 2) a computational grammar of Modern Irish couched within LexicalFunctional Grammar (LFG) (Bresnan, 2001) and implemented using the XLE grammar development platform (Crouch et al., 2008).

The role of definiteness in the impersonal passives of Modern Irish: Towards an RRG characterisation

This paper is about the impersonal passive construction of which modern Irish, a VSO language, has two forms. The impersonal passive form occurs with all verbs of Irish, across all tenses, whether intransitive or transitive. In the second form, the impersonal passive form is to be found productively with the substantive verb (one of the two verbs of ‘to be’ in Irish) across all tenses. It does ...

The Syntax of Preverbal Particles and Adjunction in Irish

It is shown that five apparently irreconcilable claims about the clausal syntax of Irish can be reconciled in a natural, base-generated LFG analysis that builds on the standard LFG theory of endocentricity and coheads/extended heads, the LFG projection architecture, and Toivonen’s (2001) work on nonprojecting categories and c-structure adjunction. The analysis also builds on McCloskey’s (1996) ...

A Delayed Syntactic-Encoding-based LFG Parsing Strategy for an Indian Language - Bangla

In this squib, we propose a technique aimed at efficient computer implementation of LFG-based parsers for Indian languages in general and Bangla (Bengali) in particular. (For the LFG formalism, see Kaplan and Bresnan [1982].) The technique may also be useful for other languages having similar properties. Indian languages are mostly nonconfigurational and highly inflectional. Grammatical functio...

Task-Specific Artifacts of Parametric Properties in English as a Second Language Acquired by Persian-Speaking Learners

This experimental study investigated the learners’ integrative acquisition of obligatory overt subjects and subject-verb clause agreement in English as an L2.
