What if You Cannot See the Target? Two Case Studies of Atlas-to-Patient Registration in Trigeminal Neuralgia Radiosurgery

چکیده

Introduction: Medically resistant trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a wellsuited pathology to be treated by radiosurgery (RS). A significant percentage (60%-70%) of patients is expected to benefit from the RS treatment. Imaging is crucial to identify the target, though unfortunately in some cases the trigeminal nerve could not be visible even in high field magnetic resonance images (MRI). The aim of this work is to develop and relatively validate a method for the atlas-based identification of the target in those cases where the trigeminal nerve is

Gamma knife radiosurgery to the trigeminal ganglion for treatment of trigeminal neuralgia secondary to vertebrobasilar ectasia

BACKGROUND We report the result obtained using Gamma knife stereotactic radiosurgery on the trigeminal ganglion (TG) in a patient with trigeminal neuralgia (TN) secondary to vertebrobasilar ectasia (VBE). CASE DESCRIPTION Retrospective review of medical records corresponding to one patient with VBE-related trigeminal pain treated with radiosurgery. Because of the impossibility of visualizatio...

Image registration strategy of T(1)-weighted and FIESTA MRI sequences in trigeminal neuralgia gamma knife radiosurgery.

BACKGROUND/AIMS In Gamma Knife radiosurgery, T(1) MRI is most commonly used and is generally sufficient for targeting the trigeminal nerve. For patients whose trigeminal nerves are unclear on T(1) MRI, FIESTA MRI supplements anatomical structure visualization and may improve trigeminal nerve delineation. The purpose of this study was to develop a registration strategy for T(1) and FIESTA MRIs. ...

Review of the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia with gamma knife radiosurgery.

BACKGROUND Trigeminal neuralgia is a debilitating condition caused by compression of the trigeminal nerve, ganglions, or divisions. Gamma knife radiosurgery has been increasingly used in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia as a non-invasive alternative to microvascular decompression and rhizotomies. METHODS We reviewed the medical literature regarding outcomes, time course, and prognostic f...

Clinical Outcomes of Gamma Knife Radiosurgery in the Treatment of Patients with Trigeminal Neuralgia

Since its introduction by Leksell, Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) has become increasingly popular as a management approach for patients diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia (TN). For this reason, we performed a modern review of the literature analyzing the efficacy of GKRS in the treatment of patients who suffer from TN. For patients with medically refractory forms of the condition, GKRS has pr...

Delayed Development of Trigeminal Neuralgia after Radiosurgical Treatment of a Tentorial Meningioma

Trigeminal neuralgia is a known symptom of the tumors and aberrant vessels near the trigeminal nerve and the tentorial notch. There are very few reports of delayed development of trigeminal neuralgia after radiosurgical treatment of a tumor in these areas. This is a case report of a patient treated with radiosurgery for radiation induced meningiomas, 30 years after childhood whole brain radiati...
