چکیده

T H A T ionizing radiations produce deleterious biological effects 'has ,been proven by sixty years of experience and experimentation. Qualitatively, the effects of all ionizing radiations, whether they are gamma rays or heavy primary cosmic parti.cles, are the same and are a manifestation of the ionization produced in cells and tissaes,. Quantita~tivety, the effects are dependent on quality and nature ,of the radiation, on the specific biologic effect under consideration, and in many cases .on the rate at whic,h the radiation dose is delivered. D,os.e rate dependence is illustrated by the lethal effects o,f Co 6~ gamma radiation on mi.ce. When delivered at :the rate of 30 r ,per minute, a,bout 700 r will result in death .of 50 ,per .cent of a large population of animals wi~;hin 30 days. V~hen delivered at a close rate of 100 r per ,day, the LD'~0 close is about 2000 r. (,)uamitative dependence of biologic effect on the .characteristics, of the radiation and the conditions of exposure make imperative the collection of more physical data on space radiati'ons before their implications to manned space flight can be adequately evaluated.

Genomics in Space Life Sciences

Since the early days of manned spaceflight, hazardous effects of the space environment on living organisms have been disputed. With the continuous manning of the International Space Station, the planned Chinese space station, and renewed interest in returning to the Moon and sending manned flights to Mars, identifying and addressing the potential outcomes of long-term space exposures is critica...

Vulnerability of Manned Orbital Command Posts to Natural Space Radiations

The shielding requirements for the protection of the crew of a manned orbital command post against the natural space radiations are investigated. Two types of orbits of military importance and of wide applicability are considered—a long-duration, high-altitude orbit above the Van Allen Belt and a short-duration, low-altitude polar orbit below it. Model environments for both orbits in terms of s...

Resume of Present Knowledge of Man's Ability to Meet the Space Environment.

T WO YEARS OF manned space flight have been completed. The pace of flight progress has increased regularly as each major milestone has been passed. In the 1 year since the previous manned flight progress report at the Aerospace Medical Association annual meeting, the United States and the Soviet Union have extended the experience to a major degree in answering the questions of how man is able t...

Body fluid distribution: implications for zero gravity.

M A N N E D SPACE flight is now a reality and data is available regarding the physiologic effects of short periods of weightlessness. 1 The results of our initial manned orbital space flights indicate that although certain phys io log ica l changes do occur during relatively short exposures to weightlessness, such changes have not been of operational significance and have been of a rather minor...

Future role of vitamin C in radiation mitigation and its possible applications in manned deep space missions: survival study and the measurement of cell viability

Background: Astronauts will be exposed to both chronic space radiation and acute high doses of energetic radiation of solar particle events in long-term deep space missions. The application of radioprotectors in space missions has basic limitations such as their very short time window as well as their acute toxicity and considerable side effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate ...
