چکیده

The spatial and temporal focusing properties of time reversal methods can be exploited for undersea acoustic communications. Spatial focusing mitigates channel fading and produces a high signal-to-noise ratio at the intended receivers along with a low probability of interception elsewhere. While the temporal focusing (compression) reduces significantly intersymbol interference (ISI), there always is some residual ISI depending upon the number of transmitters, their spatial distribution, and the complexity of the channel. Moreover, a slight change in the environment over the two-way propagation interval introduces additional ISI. Using shallow water experimental data (QPSK and 8-QAM), we demonstrate that the performance of multiple-input/multiple-output time reversal communications can be further improved by cascading the received time series with adaptive equalizers to remove the residual ISI.

On the Practical Aspects of Joint Passive Phase Conjugation and Equalization Underwater Communication Systems

Underwater acoustic communication systems suffer from the channel impairments which results in time spreading of the transmitted signal. In underwater environment, multiple replicas of the transmitted signal are received at the receiver through different paths, which causes significant Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI). Decision Feedback Equalizers (DFE) was utilized to overcome this type of inte...

Time-Domain Block and Per-Tone Equalization for MIMO-OFDM in Shallow Underwater Acoustic Communication

Shallow underwater acoustic (UWA) channel exhibits rapid temporal variations, extensive multipath spreads, and severe frequency-dependent attenuations. So, high data rate communication with high spectral efficiency in this challenging medium requires efficient system design. Multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO–OFDM) is a promising solution for reliabl...

Improving Passive Time Reversal Underwater Acoustic Communications Using Subarray Processing

Multichannel receivers are usually employed in high-rate underwater acoustic communication to achieve spatial diversity. In the context of multichannel underwater acoustic communications, passive time reversal (TR) combined with a single-channel adaptive decision feedback equalizer (TR-DFE) is a low-complexity solution to achieve both spatial and temporal focusing. In this paper, we present a n...

Adaptive and efficient nonlinear channel equalization for underwater acoustic communication

We investigate underwater acoustic (UWA) channel equalization and introduce hierarchical and adaptive nonlinear channel equalization algorithms that are highly efficient and provide significantly improved bit error rate (BER) performance. Due to the high complexity of nonlinear equalizers and poor performance of linear ones, to equalize highly difficult underwater acoustic channels, we employ p...
