Sewer and Tank Flushing for Corrosion and Pollution Control

چکیده
This paper presents an overview of causes of sewer deterioration together with a discussion of control methods that can prevent or arrest this deterioration. In particular, the paper covers inlineand combined sewer overflow(CSO) storage-tank-flushing systems for removal of sediments and minimizing hydrogen sulfide production resulting in the reduction of associated pollution and sewerline corrosion. During low-flow dry-weather periods, sanitary wastewater solids deposited in combined sewer systems can generate hydrogen sulfide and methane gases due to anaerobic conditions. Sulfates are reduced to hydrogen sulfide gas that can then be oxidized to sulfuric acid on pipes and structure walls by further biochemical transformation. Furthermore, these solids deposits or sediments are discharged to the urban streams during storm events which can cause degradation of receiving-water quality. Thus, dryweather sewer sedimentation not only creates hazardous conditions and sewer degradation but contributes significant pollutant loads to the urban receiving waters during wet-weather highflow periods. 1 Environmental Engineer and 2 Wet Weather Flow Research Program Leader, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Risk Management Research Laboratory, Water Supply and Water Resources Division, Urban Watershed Management Branch, Edison, NJ 08837. 3 Montgomery Watson, 40 Broad Street, Suite 800, Boston, MA 02109. 4 Odor and Corrosion Technology Consultants, Inc., 11250 West Road, Building AL@ Houston, TX 77065.

Controlling chemical dosing for sulfide mitigation in sewer networks using a hybrid automata control strategy.
Chemicals such as magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) and iron salts are widely used to control sulfide-induced corrosion in sewer networks composed of interconnected sewer pipe lines and pumping stations. Chemical dosing control is usually non-automatic and based on experience, thus often resulting in sewage reaching the discharge point receiving inadequate or even no chemical dosing. Moreover, inte...
متن کاملAn Integrated Methodology for the Impact Assessment of the Design and Operation of the Sewer - Waste Water Treatment Plant System on the Receiving Water Quality
The poster deals with an integrated methodology for the assessment of the impacts of alternative sewer and waste water treatment plant (WWTP) management scenario’s on the quality of the receiving waters. The input time series for the flows and concentrations at the combined sewer overflow (CSO) structures and at the treatment plant intake are obtained through a continuous sewer simulation model...
متن کاملSCORe-CT: a new method for testing effectiveness of sulfide-control chemicals used in sewer systems.
A new method for testing the effectiveness of chemical products for sulfide control in sewers is reported. The method, called SCORe-CT (Sewer Corrosion and Odour Research - Chemical Testing), consists of two specially designed laboratory-scale systems that mimic sulfide production in real rising main sewers, and a multi-phase and multi-facet testing protocol. The monitoring tools/methods includ...
متن کاملCharacterization of runoff from various urban catchments at different spatial scales in Beijing, China.
In order to investigate the characterization of runoff in storm sewer from various urban catchments, three monitoring systems at different spatial scales have been installed separately. They have been held since July 2010 in urban area of Beijing (China). The monitoring data revealed that chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and...
متن کاملThe Ecology of Acidophilic Microorganisms in the Corroding Concrete Sewer Environment
Concrete corrosion is one of the most significant problems affecting valuable sewer infrastructure on a global scale. This problem occurs in the aerobic zone of the sewer, where a layer of surface corrosion develops on the exposed concrete and the surface pH is typically lowered from around 11-10 (pristine concrete) to pH 2-4. Acidophilic microorganisms become established as biofilms within the...
