چکیده
Investigations during the past ten years have formed the basis for the working hypothesis that pituitary-adrenal cortical secretion exerts an influence on the structure and function of lymphoid tissue. The administration to rats of adrenal cortical extract, or of adrenal cortical steroids oxygenated in position 11 of the steroid nucleus, produced marked thymic atrophy.''" ' 2 40 448 Experiments conducted by Dougherty and White'° demonstrated that adrenal cortical secretion, regulated by the pituitary adrenotrophic hormone, is a normally existing mechanism which can affect lymphoid tissue mass. At a time when lymphoid tissue involution was maximal as a result of augmented pituitary-adrenal cortical secretion, a profound absolute lymphocytopenia was observed." Histological studies revealed 10, that the basis for these phenomena was the marked dissolution of lymphocytes in the lymphoid organs following augmented pituitaryadrenal cortical secretion. Thus, decreased lymphoid tissue weight was due to fewer lymphocytes in the lymphoid organs, and the lymphocytopenia appeared to be due to a failure of delivery of lymphocytes to the circulation because of their dissolution within the lymphoid organs. It was further established by White and Dougherty,' and confirmed by Kass,' that lymphocytes contain a protein which is identical with serum globulin. Moreover, in the immunized animal, antibody globulin was demonstrated in the lymphocytes of mice8 and of rabbits.'9 It is well known that the antibody of the blood is generally found in the /8and y-globulin fractions.'" This led to experiments which demonstrated that a single injection of adrenal cortical extract (aqueous or oil), or of adrenotrophic

The Influence of the Adrenal Cortex on Serum Protein Metabolism in Normal and Malignant Lymphoid Tissue* SIDNEYROBERTS
The hormonal secretions of the adrenal cortex are known to be capable of causing a striking re gression of normal lymphoid tissue (cf. 22) and of exerting at least a transient growth-arresting ef fect on various types of lymphoid tumors (1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 12, 13, 20, 21, 24). In contrast, a selective action of corticosteroids on the metabolism of nor mal and malignant lymphoid tissue has not been ...
متن کاملThe Concentration of Thyroid Hormones, Cortisol and ACTH Exposed to Chemical Weapons
ABSTRACT In order to evaluate time course of changes in serum concentration of thyroid hormones, cortisol and ACTH in patients exposed to chemical weapons containing sulfur mustard, we measured serum concentrations of hormones on the first, third and fifth week following injury in 13 soldiers and compared them to the results obtained from 34 control men. Free T4 and T3 indices were decrease...
متن کاملEvaluation of antioxidant potential of Aloe vera and pituitary sexual hormones after experimental diabetes in male rats.
Background: Diabetes is a metabolic disease that is associated with hyperglycemia and infertility. Previous studies indicate that aloe vera may positively affect the blood glucose and fertility. Objective: the present study was carried out to evaluate effect of aloe vera on serum oxidant/antioxidant activity and reproductive hormones following experimental diabetes. Methods: sixty adults male ...
متن کاملاثر کورکومین بر هورمونهای محور هیپوفیز-آدرنال و شاخصهای کلیوی در موشهای صحرایی دیابتیشده با آلوکسان
Background and Objective: Diabetes causes damage and impaired renal function. It also causes impaired secretion of endocrine glands that leads to secondary metabolic disorders. Due to the role of curcumin in lowering blood glucose and adjusted antioxidant system, this study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of curcumin on the hormones of pituitary-adrenal axis and renal ind...
متن کاملThe Influence of the Adrenal Cortex on the Mobilization of Tissue Protein* By
For more than a decade the secretions of the adrenal cortex have been associated with the metabolism of protein. The work of Long and his collaborators clearly demonstrated that the administration of potent adrenal cortical extracts to experimental animals resulted in increased gluconeogenesis, associated with accentuated nitrogen excretion (l-3). This effect of the adrenal cortex on the catabo...
