Small - scale turbulent dynamo - a numerical investigation

چکیده
We present the results of a numerical investigation of the turbulent kinematic dynamo problem in a high Prandtl number regime. The scales of the magnetic turbulence we consider are far smaller than the Kolmogorov dissipative scale, so that the magnetic wavepackets evolve in a nearly smooth velocity field. Firstly, we consider the Kraichnan-Kazantsev model (KKM) in which the strain matrix is taken to be independent of coordinate and Gaussian white in time. To simulate the KKM we use a stochastic Euler-Maruyama method. We test the theoretical predictions for the growth of rates of the magnetic energy and higher order moments and the behaviour of the polari-sation and spectral flatness (Nazarenko et al., 2003). In general, the results appear to be in good agreement with the theory, with the exception that the predicted decay of the polarisation in time is not reproduced well in the stochastic numerics. Secondly, in order to study the sensitivity of the KKM predictions to the choice of strain statistics, we perform additional simulations for the case of a Gaussian strain with a finite correlation time and also for a strain taken from a DNS data set. These experiments are based on non-stochastic schemes, using a timestep that is much smaller than the correlation time of the strain. We find that the KKM is generally insensitive to the choice of strain statistics and most KKM results, including the decay of the polarisation, are reproduced well. The only exception appears to be the flatness whose spectrum is not reproduced in accordance with the KKM predictions in these simulations.

Fluctuation dynamo and turbulent induction at low magnetic Prandtl numbers
This paper is a detailed report on a programme of direct numerical simulations of incompressible nonhelical randomly forced MHD turbulence that are used to settle a long-standing issue in the turbulent dynamo theory and demonstrate that the fluctuation dynamo exists in the limit of large magnetic Reynolds number Rm ≫ 1 and small magnetic Prandtl number Pm ≪ 1. The dependence of the critical Rmc...

Direct numerical simulations of turbulent Hall dynamos are presented. The evolution of an initially weak and small scale magnetic field in a system maintained in a stationary turbulent regime by a stirring force at a macroscopic scale is studied to explore the conditions for exponential growth of the magnetic energy. Scaling of the dynamo efficiency with the Reynolds numbers is studied, and the...
متن کاملCan the turbulent galactic dynamo generate large - scale magnetic fields ?
Large-scale magnetic fields in galaxies are thought to be generated by a turbulent dynamo. However the same turbulence also leads to a small-scale dynamo which generates magnetic noise at a more rapid rate. The efficiency of the large-scale dynamo depends on how this noise saturates. We examine this issue taking into account ambipolar drift, which obtains in a galaxy with significant neutral ga...
متن کاملThe Onset of a Small-scale Turbulent Dynamo at Low Magnetic Prandtl Numbers
We study numerically the dependence of the critical magnetic Reynolds number Rmc for the turbulent smallscale dynamo on the hydrodynamic Reynolds number Re. The turbulence is statistically homogeneous, isotropic, and mirror–symmetric. We are interested in the regime of low magnetic Prandtl number Pm = Rm/Re < 1, which is relevant for stellar convective zones, protostellar disks, and laboratory ...
متن کاملPhenomenology of turbulent dynamo growth and saturation
With a non local shell model of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence we investigate numerically the turbulent dynamo action for low and high magnetic Prandtl numbers (Pm). The results obtained in the kinematic regime and along the way to dynamo saturation are understood in terms of a phenomenological approach based on the local (Pm ≪ 1) or non local (Pm ≫ 1) nature of the energy transfers. In both ca...

We study numerically the dependence of the critical magnetic Reynolds number Rmc for the turbulent smallscale dynamo on the hydrodynamic Reynolds number Re. We are interested in the regime of low magnetic Prandtl number Pm = Rm/Re < 1, which is relevant for stellar convective zones, protostellar disks, and laboratory liquidmetal experiments. The two asymptotic possibilities are Rmc → const as R...
