Three Ways to Avoid Commitments: the Pragmatics of Declarative Force Modifiers
نویسندگان
چکیده
We discuss three constructions which seem to modify the illocutionary force of an utterance: reverse-polarity tag questions [RP-tags] (1a), same-polarity tag questions [SP-tags] (1b), and non-interrogative rising intonation [NI-rise] (1c). Rising intonation is indicated with a question mark (“?”).1 Rising intonation on syntactically declarative sentences (1c) has been discussed in Gunlogson (2003, 2008), among others.

Three Ways to Avoid Commitments: Declarative Force Modifiers in the Conversational Scoreboard
We discuss three English markers that modify the force of declarative utterances: reverse-polarity tags (Tom’s here, isn’t he?), same-polarity tags (Tom’s here, is he?), and rising intonation (Tom’s here?). The differences among them are brought out especially clearly in dialogues with taste predicates (tasty, attractive) and vague scalar predicates applied to borderline cases (red for an orang...
متن کاملNormative Pragmatics for Agent Communication Languages
The ability to communicate is one of the crucial properties of agents. In this paper a normative approach to the pragmatics of Agent Communication Languages (ACLs) is proposed. In an open environment, like the Internet, in which agents are designed in many different ways, it is important to clearly establish the meaning of a standard language for artificial agents. Traditionally, the pragmatics...
متن کاملA Modal Semantics for an Argumentation-Based Pragmatics for Agent Communication
In this paper we present a modal semantics for our approach based on social commitments and arguments for conversational agents. Our formal framework based on this approach uses three basic elements: social commitments, actions that agents apply to these social commitments and arguments that agents use to support their actions. This framework, called Commitment and Argument Network (CAN), forma...
متن کاملLanguage Support for Declarative Future Commitments
Sequential programming and work-flow programming are two useful, but radically different, ways of describing computational processing. Of the two, it is sequential programming that we teach all programmers and support by programming languages, whether in procedural, objectoriented, or functional paradigms. We teach workflow as a secondary style of problem decomposition for use in special situat...
متن کاملA critical study of Wahhabism interpretation from verses that deal with declarative attributes
Some verses of the Holy Quran ascribe attributes to God, the Almighty. This ascription has led to similitude and embodiment. The nature of these attributes has been one of the constant concerns of Quran scholars from the beginning of the spread of the knowledge of interpretation until today. Having these concerns in mind, the commentators have interpreted these verses according to their beliefs...
