Effect of Dietary Supplementation of Spirulina on Growth and Phosphatase Activity in Copper-Exposed Carp (Labeo rohita)
نویسنده
چکیده
The impact of spirulina supplementation at 0, 2, 4, 6, or 10% on the alleviation of copper toxicity was studied in the freshwater cultivable carp, Labeo rohita. Evaluation was based on selected food utilization parameters and phosphatase activities. Copper concentrations in the aquatic medium, selected body tissues, and fecal matter were analyzed to determine the mechanism of toxicity reduction. Dietary supplementation of spirulina significantly improved the tested physiological and biochemical parameters and reduced the metal burden in tissues. Reduction of metal toxicity seems to be achieved via elimination of metal through feces. A significant positive correlation (r = 0.714; p<0.01; n = 18) was obtained between supplementation of dietary spirulina and copper defecation. The addition of 4% spirulina was optimum since this dose produced the maximum elimination of copper from the body and better physiological and biochemical parameters. The treatment period (21 days) was not sufficient for complete removal of the copper. Therefore, a longer period of supplementation is recommended. * E-mail: [email protected] The IJA appears now exclusively as a peerreviewed on-line Open Access journal at http://www.siamb.org.il

The effect of Spirulina supplementation on reduction of copper toxicity based on food utilization, phosphatases activities and selected haematological parameters was studied in a freshwater cultivable fish C. mrigala. Metal concentration in medium, body tissues and fecal matter was also analysed. Sublethal exposure of C. mrigala fed Spirulina-free diet significantly reduced the consumption and ...

The effects of temperature and salinity stress on hemato-immunological factors in juvenile Labeo rohita fed normal or elevated levels of tryptophan were studied. Fish were fed diets with 0.35% (control), 0.7%, or 1.4% tryptophan for 60 days, then exposed to temperature and/or salinity stress for the next 30 days with the same feeding regime. The specific growth rate (SGR) was significantly redu...

The snail’s specie, Oncomelania quadrasi, is found abundantly in fresh water fish ponds of Punjab. It is an intermediate carrier / host of various digenetic trematode parasites which causes many serious fish diseases in aquaculture ponds. The purpose of this study was targeted for controlling these snails in aquatic environments through chemical control strategies using copper sulfate as an era...
