Quality-of-Service Encoding Scheme for Optical Packet-Switched Fabrics

چکیده
The future Internet architecture will require a clean-slate design in order to successfully accommodate the exploding bandwidth demand. Next-generation networking applications should support a bidirectional cross-layer information exchange in which the physical-layer performance, characteristics, and impairments can be extracted for higher-layer routing decisions. The dynamic cross-layer mechanisms should further be aware of the packet’s quality-of-service (QoS). By invoking QoS requirements and classes directly on the optical physical layer, the end-to-end network performance may be optimized [2]. The architecture should also exploit optical packet-switched (OPS) fabrics as a low-latency, highbandwidth approach to switch optical messages with low power. Embedding QoS guarantees on the physical layer through QoS and priority levels may constitute an important requirement for achieving significant performance gains within the scope of broadband message routing. An optimal coding protocol must be designed and experimentally implemented to demonstrate the feasibility of creating QoS-aware routing of optical packets.

The Effect of Delay Mismatch in MPLS Networks Using 1+1 Protection
High-capacity optical-fiber backbone networks protect information flows belonging to their premium customers by routing two copies of the customer’s data over disjoint paths. This scheme, known as 1+1 protection, ensures that the customer will experience no service interruptions even if a fiber cut occurs somewhere in the network. A protection scheme based on this concept was recently proposed ...

A crucial issue in optical packet switched (OPS) networks is packet losses at the network layer caused by contentions. This paper presents the network layer packet redundancy scheme (NLPRS), which is a novel approach to reduce the end-to-end data packet loss rate in OPS networks. By introducing redundancy packets in the OPS network, the NLPRS enables a possible reconstruction of data packets th...

A cross-layer network platform may enable introspective access to the physical layer, allowing optical performance monitoring measurements to feedback to higher layers for packet rerouting and protection. We experimentally demonstrate quality-of-service-aware packet protection that leverages cross-layer signaling based on the monitoring of packets' optical-signal-to-noise ratio. In order to det...

Optical networks became very important in the latest years, thanks to their high traffic capacity, because of the continuous growth of total exchanged data and the request of real-time communication. Since they have (relatively) long adaptation times, this technology is not inherently the most suitable to carry bursty traffic like the current one. Hybrid networks try to get the best from optica...
متن کاملStochastic Admission Control for Quality of Service in Wireless Packet Networks
Call admission control is a key element for providing quality of service (QoS) in mobile wireless networks. Traditional admission control schemes only address call-level QoS guarantee because of the underlying circuit-based network architecture. In contrast, emerging wireless technologies such as 3G and 4G tend to be packet-switched rather than circuit-switched because the packet-based architec...
