چکیده

This article presents an overview of Probabilistic Automata (PA) and discrete Hidden Markov Models (HMMs), and aims at clarifying the links between them. The first part of this work concentrates on probability distributions generated by these models. Necessary and sufficient conditions for an automaton to define a probabilistic language are detailed. It is proved that probabilistic deterministic automata (PDFA) form a proper subclass of probabilistic non-deterministic automata (PNFA). Two families of equivalent models are described next. On one hand, HMMs and PNFA with no final probabilities generate distributions over complete finite prefix-free sets. On the other hand, HMMs with final probabilities and probabilistic automata generate distributions over strings of finite length. The second part of this article presents several learning models, which formalize the problem of PA induction or, equivalently, the problem of HMM topology induction and parameter estimation. These learning models include the PAC and identification with probability 1 frameworks. Links with Bayesian learning are also discussed. The last part of this article presents an overview of induction algorithms for PA or HMMs using state merging, state splitting, parameter pruning and error-correcting techniques. 2005 Pattern Recognition Society. Links between multiplicity automata, observable operator models and predictive state representations: a unified learning framework

Stochastic multiplicity automata (SMA) are weighted finite automata that generalize probabilistic automata. They have been used in the context of probabilistic grammatical inference. Observable operator models (OOMs) are a generalization of hidden Markov models, which in turn are models for discrete-valued stochastic processes and are used ubiquitously in the context of speech recognition and b...

On the Learnability of Hidden Markov Models

A simple result is presented that links the learning of hidden Markov models to results in complexity theory about nonlearnability of finite automata under certain cryptographic assumptions. Rather than considering all probability distributions, or even just certain specific ones, the learning of a hidden Markov model takes place under a distribution induced by the model itself.

On Probability Distributions for Trees: Representations, Inference and Learning

We study probability distributions over free algebras of trees. Probability distributions can be seen as particular (formal power) tree series [BR82; EK03], i.e. mappings from trees to a semiring K. A widely studied class of tree series is the class of rational (or recognizable) tree series which can be defined either in an algebraic way or by means of multiplicity tree automata. We argue that ...

An Adaptive Approach to Increase Accuracy of Forward Algorithm for Solving Evaluation Problems on Unstable Statistical Data Set

Nowadays, Hidden Markov models are extensively utilized for modeling stochastic processes.
