Nitrogen Fixation by Yeasts and Other Fungi

چکیده

Since the epoch making discoveries of Hellriegel~ there have followed in quick succession many series of investigations relative to the hxation of atmospheric nitrogen by living organisms. Especially brilliant are the investigations of Winogradskyt on Clostridium pastorianum and those of Beyerincka on the Azotobacter group, and it is unnecessary here to go into a review of the investigations which have since added themselves to those, for the reader is doubtless acquainted with the painstaking and interesting researches of Gerlach and Vogel, Kriiger and Schneidewind, J. G. Lipman, Liihnis, Christensen and a host of others to whom we are indebted for information on the subject of the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen by soil bacteria. Suffice it to say, that the researches of the past twenty-five years have disclosed facts which point emphatically toward the conclusion that the earth is endowed with agencies which, at least in part, compensate for the losses from our valuable nitrogen store from the soil which are constantly going on. From the earliest of these researches it appeared that the power of living organisms to assimilate atmospheric nitrogen was limited to a small group of bacteria of which the power seemed as characteristic and distinct as did the power of the group of nitrifying bacteria to change ammonium compounds to nitrates, but the later investigations soon brought to light the fact that many bacteria other than those of the B. radicicola, the Azotobacter and the Clostridium groups exhibited the power, more or less pronounced, of king atmospheric nitro-

High incidence of onychomycosis due to saprophytic fungi in Yazd, Iran

Background: Onychomycosis, the fungal infection of the toenails or fingernails, is caused by three major groups of fungi including dermatophytes, yeasts and non-dermatophyte molds. The objective of the present study was to determine the incidence of onychomycosis and to identify the causative fungi during a one year period in Yazd, Iran. Materials and Methods: From Apr 2013 to Apr 2014 a total ...

Relationship of nitrite and hydroxylamine reductases to nitrate assimilation and nitrogen fixation in Azotobacter agile.

The nitrogen fixation process has been recently reviewed by Wilson (1952), Burris (1956), Shug et al. (1956), and Gest et al. (1956). Although the characteristics of the over-all process in vivo are well known, neither the pathway nor the enzymatic steps has been established. On the other hand, a number of enzymes from bacteria, fungi and higher plants have been characterized which together can...

Phosphorus use efficiency in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) as related to compatibility of association among arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and rhizobia

The tripartite symbiosis of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) recombinant inbred line (RIL) 147 with rhizobia and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) was assessed in sand culture by comparing the effects of three AMF species on the mycorrhizal root colonization, rhizobial nodulation, plant growth and phosphorus use efficiency for symbiotic nitrogen fixation. Although Glomus intraradices well c...

Transition Metal Transport in Plants and Associated Endosymbionts: Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi and Rhizobia

Transition metals such as iron, copper, zinc, or molybdenum are essential nutrients for plants. These elements are involved in almost every biological process, including photosynthesis, tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress, or symbiotic nitrogen fixation. However, plants often grow in soils with limiting metallic oligonutrient bioavailability. Consequently, to ensure the proper metal levels, ...

Actinorhizal, mycorhizal and rhizobial symbioses: how much do we know?

The symbiotic association between certain plants and microorganisms plays an important role in soil fertilization, and improves their growth and mineral nutrition. Microorganisms implicated in this symbiotic interaction are from two groups: bacteria and fungi. The bacteria group is implicated on nitrogen fixation (for review see Pawlowski and Bisseling, 1996), while the fungal group is involved...
