چکیده

Since the dimensions of many of the objects/surfaces encountered in our daily lives are within an order of magnitude of the wavelength of audible sounds, diffraction is an elementary means of sound propagation. Despite its importance in the real-world, diffraction effects are often overlooked by acoustical modeling methods leading to a degredation in immersion or presence. This paper describes an acoustical diffraction method based on the Huygens-Fresnel principle. The method is simple and efficient allowing it to be incorporated in interactive acoustical environments including virtual environments. Experimental results are presented that illustrate the performance and effectiveness of the method and its conformance to theoretical diffraction models.

Sonel Mapping: A Probabilistic Acoustical Modeling Method

Sonel mapping is a Monte-Carlo-based acoustical modeling technique that approximates the acoustics of an environment while accounting for diffuse and specular reflections as well as diffraction effects. Through the use of a probabilistic Russian roulette strategy to determine the type of interaction between a sound and any objects/surfaces it may encounter, sonel mapping avoids excessively larg...

Models and Algorithms for Interactive audio Rendering

Realistic modeling of reverberant sound in 3D virtual worlds provides users with important cues for localizing sound sources and understanding spatial properties of the environment. Unfortunately, current geometric acoustic modeling systems do not accurately simulate reverberant sound. Instead, they model only direct transmission and specular reflection, while diffraction is either ignored or m...

Real-Time Acoustical Diffraction and First-Order Specular Reflection Modeling Using the GPU

Although the inclusion of spatial sound cues in virtual environments and video games can lead to increases in presence and immersion, spatial sound cues are often overlooked and neglected by designers of virtual environments and video games. However, simulating the propagation of a sound after being emitted from a sound source until it reaches the listener can be computationally very expensive ...

A beam tracing method for interactive architectural acoustics.

A difficult challenge in geometrical acoustic modeling is computing propagation paths from sound sources to receivers fast enough for interactive applications. This paper describes a beam tracing method that enables interactive updates of propagation paths from a stationary source to a moving receiver in large building interiors. During a precomputation phase, convex polyhedral beams traced fro...
