Maxallent: Maximizers of all entropies and uncertainty of uncertainty
نویسنده
چکیده
The entropy maximum approach (Maxent) was developed as a minimization of the subjective uncertainty measured by the Boltzmann–Gibbs–Shannon entropy. Many new entropies have been invented in the second half of the 20th century. Now there exists a rich choice of entropies for fitting needs. This diversity of entropies gave rise to a Maxent ‘‘anarchism’’. The Maxent approach is now the conditional maximization of an appropriate entropy for the evaluation of the probability distribution when our information is partial and incomplete. The rich choice of non-classical entropies causes a new problem: which entropy is better for a given class of applications? We understand entropy as a measure of uncertainty which increases in Markov processes. In this work, we describe the most general ordering of the distribution space, with respect to which all continuous-time Markov processes are monotonic (theMarkov order). For inference, this approach results in a set of conditionally ‘‘most random’’ distributions. Each distribution from this set is a maximizer of its own entropy. This ‘‘uncertainty of uncertainty’’ is unavoidable in the analysis of nonequilibrium systems. Surprisingly, the constructive description of this set of maximizers is possible. Two decomposition theorems for Markov processes provide a tool for this description. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Formulation of the uncertainty relations in terms of the Rényi entropies
Quantum-mechanical uncertainty relations for position and momentum are expressed in the form of inequalities involving the Rényi entropies. The proof of these inequalities requires the use of the exact expression for the p ,q -norm of the Fourier transformation derived by Babenko and Beckner. Analogous uncertainty relations are derived for angle and angular momentum and also for a pair of compl...
متن کاملFeasible sets, comparative risk aversion, and comparative uncertainty aversion in bargaining
We study feasible sets of the bargaining problem under two different assumptions: the players are subjective expected utility maximizers or the players are Choquet expected utility maximizers. For the latter case, we consider the effects on bargaining solutions when players become more risk averse and when they become more uncertainty averse. JEL Classification: C78, D81
متن کاملRényi Entropy and the Uncertainty Relations
Quantum mechanical uncertainty relations for the position and the momentum and for the angle and the angular momentum are expressed in the form of inequalities involving the Rényi entropies. These uncertainty relations hold not only for pure but also for mixed states. Analogous uncertainty relations are valid also for a pair of complementary observables (the analogs of x and p) in N-level syste...
متن کاملSensitivity and uncertainty analysis of sediment rating equation coefficients using the Monte-Carlo simulation (Case study: Zoshk-Abardeh watershed, Shandiz)
The sediment load estimation is essential for watershed management and soil conservation strategies. The sediment rating curve is the most common approach for estimating the sediment load when the observed sediment records are not available. With regard to the measurement errors and the limitation of available data, the sediment rating curve has a degree of uncertainty which should be accounted...
متن کاملP69: Prevalence of Obsessive Beliefs and Intolerance of Uncertainty among College Students
Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is increasingly conceptualized as a transdiagnostic factor underlying anxiety disorders and depression. Current understanding of the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and specific obsessive compulsive symptom domains remains limited. The purpose of the present study was to explore the prevalence of obsessive compulsive beliefs and intolerance of unc...
