Fractal dimension of non-network space of a catchment basin

چکیده
[1] Topographically convex regions within a catchment basin represent varied degrees of hill-slopes. The nonnetwork space (M), the characterization of which we address in this letter, is akin to the space that is achieved by subtracting channelized portions contributed due to concave regions from the watershed space (X). This nonnetwork space is similar to non-channelized convex region within a catchment basin. We propose an alternative shapedependent quantity like fractal dimension to characterize this non-network space. Towards this goal, we decompose the non-network space in two-dimensional discrete space into simple non-overlapping disks (NODs) of various sizes by employing mathematical morphological transformations and certain logical operations. Furthermore, we plot the number of NODs of less than threshold radius against the radius, and compute the shape-dependent fractal dimension of non-network space.

Introduction: Many natural phenomena have many variables that make it difficult to find relationships between them using common mathematical methods. This problem, along with the impossibility of measuring all elements of nature, has led to a major evolution in the way of understanding and explaining phenomena. In this way, one can use the fractal geometry with the theory that many natural phen...

Every phenomena in the nature, despite the complexity of the subject, has certain rules and regulations. River pattern and behavior as one of the most complex natural phenomena to this is not an exception. Depending on geomorphologic, climatic, topographic and erosive conditions, the waterways exhibit different patterns and behaviors. One of the parameters which can be achieved using the comple...

The self-similar organization of geological structures which results in the concept of fractality was pointed out in the 60's by Richardson [1] and has contributed to the establishment of a general theory by Mandelbrot [2]. Firstly applied to the coastlines, it proved to be of major interest when used for hydrological elements since it often reflects properties of the complete catchment basin, ...

In analyzing a signal, especially a non-stationary signal, it is often necessary the desired signal to be segmented into small epochs. Segmentation can be performed by splitting the signal at time instances where signal amplitude or frequency change. In this paper, the signal is initially decomposed into signals with different frequency bands using wavelet transform. Then, fractal dimension of ...
