Beer potomania: an unusual cause of hyponatremia at high risk of complications from rapid correction.

چکیده
An unusual syndrome of hyponatremia was described in eer drinkers dating back to the early 1970s. The syndrome beer potomania” is used to describe a patient who presents ith hyponatremia in conjunction with low daily solute ntake and excessive beer drinking. This pathophysiological tate results in patients at serious risk of rapid correction of yponatremia and its neurological sequelae. This article eviews the literature for both beer potomania and osmotic emyelination syndrome (ODS). Two patients with beer otomania with differing outcomes are presented, with cruial differences in management. The article describes pathohysiological characteristics and the unique management hallenges of beer potomania. Last, recommendations and n algorithm for the treatment of patients with hyponatremia aused by beer potomania are presented as a potential guide o prevent the catastrophic outcome of ODS.

Beer Potomania--An Unusual Cause of Hyponatremia.
The first case of severe hyponatremia, since referred to as beer potomania, in a heavy beer drinker patient was reported in 1972. Excessive consumption of beer in particular, which has a low solute content, may result in severe hyponatremia. We report a case of severe hyponatremia that occurred in a patient who, owing to his underlying colon cancer, was drinking beer and ingesting little food.
متن کامل“Beer Potomania” – A Syndrome of Severe Hyponatremia with Unique Pathophysiology: Case Studies and Literature Review
Beer potomania, a unique syndrome of hyponatremia, was first reported in 1972. It is described as the excessive intake of alcohol, particularly beer, together with poor dietary solute intake that leads to fatigue, dizziness, and muscular weakness. The low solute content of beer, and suppressive effect of alcohol on proteolysis result in reduced solute delivery to the kidney. The presence of ina...
متن کاملA Rare Case of Low-Solute Hyponatremia in a Nonalcoholic Person
Low-solute hyponatremia is a relatively uncommon entity of euvolemic hyponatremia. Classic cases were described in alcoholics as beer potomania, which is characterized by hyponatremia in the setting of low-solute intake due to heavy beer drinking. We report a case of low-solute hyponatremia in a nonalcoholic person who was given a solute load, and, subsequently, had excessive diuresis with the ...

An alcoholic patient presented with profound hyponatremia (serum sodium concentration, 96 mEq/L) caused by the combined effects of a thiazide diuretic, serotonin reuptake inhibitor, beer potomania, and hypovolemia. A computed tomographic scan of the brain was indistinguishable from one obtained 3 weeks earlier when he was normonatremic. Concurrent administration of 3% saline solution and desmop...
