Energetics and dynamics of H bonds in carboxylic acids studied by resonant photoacoustic spectroscopy

Dissociation rates of dimeric formic (methanoic)-, acetic (ethanoic)and propionic acid in the gas phase were measured over the pressure range 0.01-100 mbar and for temperatures between 290 K and 325 K. Standing acoustic waves in a cylindrical cavity were excited by absorption of amplitude-modulated COz-laser radiation. Consistent sets of kinetic and thermodynamic properties of the dimerfmonomer mixture were obtained from the parameters of the first radial acoustic resonances of the acoustic resonator.

A variety of carboxylic acids, alcohols and alkanes were studied using photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) with an excitation wavelength of 3.39 km. The analytical potential of this method was estimated with different organic compounds dissolved in chloroform. A detection limit of 0.25% with a signal to noise ratio of 6 was achieved.
