چکیده

Rainwater harvesting systems are one way to address the worldwide increase in water demand. If the harvested rainwater is for indoor use, residential users often disinfect it. If it is disinfected with chlorine, the presence of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) can lead to the formation of harmful disinfection by-products such as trihalomethanes (THMs). Although the quality of harvested rainwater produced in individual residences is not regulated, it would be wise for a user to comply with United States Environmental Protection Agency drinking water standards; total THMs are regulated at 80 g/L in tap water. In this study, we examined THM formation in chlorinated rainwater harvested from a full-scale asphalt fiberglass shingle roof. Under disinfection conditions relevant for a residence, total THMs were formed at concentrations from

The effect of roofing material on the quality of harvested rainwater.

Due to decreases in the availability and quality of traditional water resources, harvested rainwater is increasingly used for potable and non-potable purposes. In this study, we examined the effect of conventional roofing materials (i.e., asphalt fiberglass shingle, Galvalume(®) metal, and concrete tile) and alternative roofing materials (i.e., cool and green) on the quality of harvested rainwa...

The Effect of Photovoltaic Nanomaterial Roofing on Harvested Rainwater Quality

The global freshwater and energy crisis have prompted worldwide investments in rainwater harvesting and solar energy systems. As the implementation of these two systems develops concurrently, they can easily become integrated into one rooftop structure. Photovoltaic systems have the potential to leach heavy metals and other toxins from newly installed, broken or aged modules. Since the type of ...

Trihalomethane formation potential in drinking water from Minab Steghlal dam to water distribution network in Bandar Abbas, Iran

Introduction: Organic matters enter to drinking water from a variety of sources, but one of the major sources of these compounds in aqueous solution can be decomposed plant and microbial residues. Chlorination is the most common method for water disinfection, the free chlorine in the water reacts with natural organic compounds and form disinfection byproducts. One of the dangerous byproducts is...

Distribution of indigenous bacterial pathogens and potential pathogens associated with roof-harvested rainwater.

The harvesting of rainwater is gaining acceptance among many governmental authorities in countries such as Australia, Germany, and South Africa, among others. However, conflicting reports on the microbial quality of harvested rainwater have been published. To monitor the presence of potential pathogenic bacteria during high-rainfall periods, rainwater from 29 rainwater tanks was sampled on four...

Microbiological Values of Rainwater Harvested in Adelaide

In Australia, rainwater is an important source of water for many households. Unlike municipal water, rainwater is often consumed untreated. This study investigated the potential contamination of rainwater by microorganisms. Samples from 53 rainwater tanks across the Adelaide region were collected and tested using Colilert™ IDEXX Quanti-Tray*/2000. Twenty-eight out of the 53 tanks (53%) containe...
