چکیده

Knowledge of the intrinsic shape of molecular clouds and molecular cloud cores provides useful information on both the formation and collapse mechanisms associated with the objects and on the initial conditions for star formation. We compare the shapes of molecular clouds as determined by the Heyer et al. (2001, HCS01) and Brunt et al. (2003, BKP03) catalogues of CO(J = 1 − 0) emission in the outer Galaxy. The catalogues are based upon different versions of the FCRAO Outer Galaxy Survey and also utilize different techniques for defining both the extent and shape of the clouds, which allows us to examine the effects of using different cloud definition and shape-fitting algorithms. In order to compare the two catalogues we use a subset of the cloud population where the clouds are well-defined in both data sets. We model the clouds in terms of triaxial ellipsoids and use a Monte Carlo technique to determine the best-fit intrinsic shape distribution which matches the observed axis ratio distributions. Our analysis shows that the observed shapes of molecular clouds can be best described in terms of an intrinsic distribution of triaxial ellipsoids that are intermediate between near-oblate and near-prolate ellipsoids. The lack of high axis ratio clouds seen in the HCS01 catalogue is shown to be an artifact of the cloud definition algorithm and not an intrinsic property of the molecular clouds.

The Intrinsic Shapes of Molecular Cloud Fragments over a Range of Length Scales

We decipher intrinsic three-dimensional shape distributions of molecular clouds, cloud cores, Bok globules, and condensations using recently compiled catalogues of observed axis ratios for these objects mapped in carbon monoxide, ammonia, through optical selection, or in continuum dust emission. We apply statistical techniques to compare assumed intrinsic axis ratio distributions with observed ...

Statistical assessment of shapes and magnetic field orientations in molecular clouds through polarization observations

We present a novel statistical analysis aimed at deriving the intrinsic shapes and magnetic field orientations of molecular clouds using dust emission and polarization observations by the Hertz polarimeter. Our observables are the aspect ratio of the projected plane-of-the-sky cloud image and the angle between the mean direction of the plane-of-the-sky component of the magnetic field and the sh...

A Numerical Study of Dynamic Detonability Characteristics of Two-phase Unconfined Fuel-Air Clouds

A numerical simulation has been carried out to study the detonability characteristics of two- phase unconfined clouds. The parameters equivalence ratio, turbulence, shape, volume and uniformity of the cloud and the delay time distribution are recognized and introduced as the most important factors determining the reactivity of the cloud and influencing the initiation of a successful detonation....

The Intrinsic Shape of Point Clouds

The Intrinsic Shape of Point Clouds Stefan Ohrhallinger, PhD Concordia University, 2012 Given a point cloud, in the form of unorganized points, the problem of automatically connecting the dots to obtain an aesthetically pleasing and piecewise-linear closed interpolating boundary shape has been extensively researched for over three decades. In R, it is even more complicated to find an aesthetic ...

Effects of Structure and Partially Localization of the π Electron Clouds of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes on the Cation-π Interactions

A C102H30 graphene sheet has been rolled up to construct Single-Walled Carbon NanoTube Fragments (SWCNTFs) as parts of armchair carbon nanotubes by computational quantum chemistry methods. Non-covalent cation-π interactions of the Na+ cation on the central rings of SWCNTFs have investigated. The binding energies of the Na+-SWCNTF complexes versus ...
