چکیده

We demonstrated the remote control of insects in free flight via an implantable radio-equipped miniature neural stimulating system. The pronotum mounted system consisted of neural stimulators, muscular stimulators, a radio transceiver-equipped microcontroller and a microbattery. Flight initiation, cessation and elevation control were accomplished through neural stimulus of the brain which elicited, suppressed or modulated wing oscillation. Turns were triggered through the direct muscular stimulus of either of the basalar muscles. We characterized the response times, success rates, and free-flight trajectories elicited by our neural control systems in remotely controlled beetles. We believe this type of technology will open the door to in-flight perturbation and recording of insect flight responses.

Recent Developments in the Remote Radio Control of Insect Flight

The continuing miniaturization of digital circuits and the development of low power radio systems coupled with continuing studies into the neurophysiology and dynamics of insect flight are enabling a new class of implantable interfaces capable of controlling insects in free flight for extended periods. We provide context for these developments, review the state-of-the-art and discuss future dir...

Autonomous Flight Test of Flapping Micro Air Vehicle

1 General Introduction A Flapping Micro Air Vehicle (FMAV) is an aircraft that flies by flapping its wings. Designers seek to imitate the flapping-wing flight of birds, bats and insects. Though machines may differ in form, they are usually built on the same scale as these flying creatures. Basic open-loop flight control is possible through a radio frequency remote controller with joystick [1]. ...

Ocelli based remote control of insect flight

Insect Dorsal Ocelli (9:00am–12:30pm, Room 304, July 27th) Organizer: †Joshua van Kleef (University of California Berkeley, USA). Most insects possess three simple eyes, known as the dorsal ocelli, whose role in behavior has fascinated scientists for hundreds of years. Our workshop will examine the latest optical, anatomical, neurophysiological and behavioural clues to the functions of ocelli i...

Designing a Biomimetic Ornithopter Capable of Sustained and Controlled Flight

We describe the design of four ornithopters ranging in wing span from 10 cm to 40 cm, and in weight from 5 g to 45 g. The controllability and power supply are two major considerations, so we compare the efficiency and characteristics between different types of subsystems such as gearbox and tail shape. Our current ornithopter is radio-controlled with inbuilt visual sensing and capable of takeof...
